QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Accountancy qualification (desirable).

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Proven experience of working in a finance-related role, ideally within a local authority environment.
  • Experience leading change or efficiency initiatives, with a track record of delivering improvements.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including experience of working with senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent IT and technical skills, with the ability to adapt to new systems and support automation initiatives.
  • Highly numerate and literate with excellent analytical ability.
Responsibilities

WHAT’S INVOLVED WITH THIS ROLE:

Senior Finance Officers provide high-quality, comprehensive finance support across the Council. Drawing on technical expertise, knowledge, and experience, they add value, resolve challenges, and drive process improvements across their areas of responsibility.
As senior members of the finance team, they play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the service, supporting Finance Managers/Deputy Chief Accountants, and acting as the first point of contact for service enquiries. They are responsible for owning and delivering specific finance processes in a consistent, standardised, and efficient manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead on specific finance service menu items and deliver high-quality finance activities, including Budget review and challenge, Corporate accounting and financial planning, Capital and project financial planning and Financial activity support to Council services.
  • Take ownership of finance processes to ensure they are delivered consistently and efficiently, training and supporting others where needed.
  • Proactively coach, develop, and quality assure the work of colleagues, driving improvements in service delivery, standards, and productivity.
  • Act as first point of contact for escalated finance enquiries, resolving issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste, stop non-value-adding activities, and promote simplified and shared ways of working.
