Role Purpose We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Financial Accountant to join our Finance team. SmartestEnergy Australia is currently implementing Workday Finance, this role will be a key enabler for creating capacity for the finance team on the project to be fully invested in the transformation initiative. The expectation is this role will take ownership of activities related to financial accounting and financial control. Most importantly, this role will be responsible for ensuring our finance team’s standards in providing excellent customer experience to our stakeholders are maintained. In this role you will play an integral part in the financial accounting month-end close process, assisting with a variety of tasks including the preparation of accounting journals, bank and other reconciliations, and the month end reporting of results. You will also be involved in regulatory related reporting along with year-end statutory deliverables. As a subsidiary of the Marubeni Corporation, you will gain exposure to group reporting requirements and assist with providing analysis support as requested from our parent. Key Responsibilities: Financial accounting Prepare journals for month-end financial accounting and reporting. Prepare and analyse balance sheet reconciliations. Manage the fixed asset register and monitor WIP IT projects. Assist with the month-end reporting pack compilation including analysis of movements and variance against KPIs. Support with revenue recording and assist the Treasury team with bank reconciliations. Assist with statutory and group audit reporting, including the preparation of notes and supporting documents. Respond and provide variance analysis support to queries both internally from stakeholders and externally from our auditors. Maintain the chart of accounts in our Xero ledger system. Group reporting Respond and provide variance support and analysis to queries from Group. Complete entertainment and other specific reporting templates. Other intercompany reporting and reconciliations (e.g. intercompany recharges). Assist with carbon reporting for both the UK and Australia. Other Ad hoc support for Accounts payable and Accounts receivable. Assist with the preparation of our GST BAS review and other tax items e.g. FBT. Assist with the internal and JSoX audits for reporting to Marubeni. Other ad-hoc tasks as required, including driving continuous process improvements and automation in financial accounting activities. Conduct annual fixed asset inspections with the IT team and Office Manager Performance Indicators: Financial Accuracy & Compliance Timeliness of Month-End Close Complete month-end journals and reconciliations within agreed deadlines. Accuracy of Financial Statements Zero material errors in statutory and group reporting submissions. Compliance with Standards Adherence to AASB standards (e.g., AASB 9, 13, 15, 16) and Tax regulations. Reporting & Analysis Variance Analysis Quality Provide clear, actionable variance explanations against KPIs in reporting packs. Audit Readiness Timely delivery of audit schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audits. Operational Efficiency Reconciliation Completion Rate All bank and balance sheet reconciliations completed accurately each month. Fixed Asset & WIP Monitoring Ensure proper tracking of IT projects and asset capitalisation. Stakeholder Engagement Internal Customer Satisfaction Positive feedback from Finance Managers, auditors, and cross-functional teams. Collaboration Metrics Active participation in transformation projects and process improvement initiatives. Strategic Contribution Support for Sustainability Goals Incorporate carbon accounting and renewable energy compliance in reporting. Experience: Energy industry experience is preferred, but not essential. Relevant tertiary qualifications in finance/accounting and either CA or CPA qualified. Previous experience in a similar financial accounting role, having completed month end close processes, associated reconciliations and other statutory reporting. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Experience with Xero (preferred, but not essential). Prior experience of working with Approval Max or other similar applications. Knowledge: General understanding of accounting principles and relevant standards, primarily AASB 9, 13, 15, and 16. Proficient in using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. Basic understanding of Australian Energy Market dynamics (familiarity with trading & risk management of electricity positions). Familiarity with renewable energy regulations & carbon accounting standards in Australia.
