Senior Financial Accountant

10-Month Contract | Sydney or Newcastle | Hybrid Working

We are partnering with Compassion Australia who are seeking an experienced Senior Financial Accountant to join their finance team on a fixed-term contract. This recruit will provide critical support while key team members focus on the implementation of a new ERP system. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys owning the finance function, managing audits and statutory reporting, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

With a new system going live from 1 July, you'll play a key role in maintaining business-as-usual operations while supporting the organisation through a period of change.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Finance and working within a collaborative team of 11 finance professionals, you will take ownership of the Senior Financial Accountant function, supported by experienced long-term team members. You'll be responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance and governance activities, while helping maintain the integrity of financial systems and processes.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the month-end close process and preparation of management accounts
• Preparing and reviewing general ledger journals and balance sheet reconciliations
• Managing the annual audit process and statutory financial reporting requirements
• Ensuring compliance with taxation and regulatory obligations
• Providing technical accounting advice and guidance on Australian Accounting Standards
• Maintaining accounting policies, procedures and internal controls
• Developing cash flow forecasts and financial reporting insights
• Supporting finance projects and continuous improvement initiatives
• Contributing to the organisation's transition from Microsoft Dynamics GP to Workday

About You

You are a technically capable finance professional who can quickly integrate into a team, take ownership of responsibilities and work effectively in a changing environment.

We're looking for:

• CA or CPA qualification
• Extensive financial accounting experience within medium to large organisations
• Strong technical accounting knowledge, including Australian Accounting Standards and financial reporting requirements
• Proven experience managing annual external audits
• Demonstrated experience preparing statutory financial statements
• Strong analytical skills and exceptional attention to detail
• Ability to work independently while building strong stakeholder relationships
• Experience working with mid-market or enterprise ERP systems
• Experience using Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) will be highly regarded
• Experience in either not-for-profit or commercial environments will be considered
