This one sits quietly behind a great many of Queensland’s biggest transactions and investments, moving high value work between government, business and the community in a way almost nobody notices and everybody relies on. It runs on a long term operating model with institutional backing, and that buys a rare mix of commercial discipline, public purpose and stability. Revenue is highly predictable, margins are strong and there is clear visibility of future cash flows.

The finance function is compact and high calibre, working close to senior decision makers, external advisers and regulators. What is unusual is the starting point. The business is already well run and the cash flow is extraordinary, so the agenda is not repair, it is improvement. Lifting reporting quality, tightening controls and getting ahead of new disclosure requirements while there is still time to do it properly. This Senior Financial Accountant role is where a good deal of that work will get done.

The Role

Reporting to the Financial Controller, and working closely with the deputy CFO and the Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer, the Senior Financial Accountant role carries the general ledger and a real share of the statutory reporting. The general journals, month end and the balance sheet reconciliations, then the financial statements and the audit that follows them. There is no layer sitting between you and the person who runs the function.

The other half of the job is improvement, and it is worth being precise about what that means here. In most businesses, improving finance means firefighting. Something is broken, cash is tight and you are patching a process while everyone tries to keep the doors open. None of that applies. The numbers are already right, the cash flow is extraordinary and there is genuine appetite to invest, so the list is deliberate, properly funded and spread across the next few years. You would be taking a well run business from good to outstanding rather than dragging a struggling one back to acceptable.

- Preparing and processing the general journals, including fixed assets and treasury

- Working the month end close, including the balance sheet reconciliations

- Preparing the year end financial statements alongside the Financial Controller

- Supporting the external audit, and getting the auditors what they need accurately and on time

- Treasury accounting, and the technical accounting questions that come with it

- Working through a deliberate list of process improvements, with the time and the backing to do them properly

- Taking a share of the ESG and climate disclosure reporting as those responsibilities are shaped

- Payroll tax, BAS, FBT and other statutory lodgements

- Working alongside the finance business partners who run accounts payable, receivable and banking

- Keeping records, files and workpapers in a state where anyone could pick them up

About You

You are the kind of Senior Financial Accountant who cannot leave a process alone once you can see a better version of it. You are also the kind who stops before diving in, because when something lands that you have not seen in quite that shape before, you look for the parallel in work you have done, you think about how you will approach it and you know when to back your own judgement and when to ask.

Common sense, critical thinking and problem solving sound like ordinary things to ask for. They are rarer than they should be, and they are what this team is actually looking for. You may be a first mover out of an accounting firm, you may come from business services, or you may already sit in a commercial team having run a few month end cycles. What matters more is that you want to settle somewhere, grow into a role across several years, and be invested in while you do it.
