ABOUT US

The Saskatchewan Pension Plan (SPP), was created in 1986 and is a fully funded, capital accumulation plan created by the provincial government. SPP provides a professionally managed pension plan at low fees to individuals with little or no access to employer-sponsored pensions. SPP has over $850 M in assets under management and over 32,000 members.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The SPP is seeking a well-organized, client-focused, and efficient individual to join its finance team in Kindersley in the Senior Financial Investment Officer position. Reporting to the Manager of Finance, the successful person will be responsible for overseeing all accounting activities including adjustments and accruals, reconciling the systems, and preparing the financial statements and notes. This individual will also supervise and train the finance staff involved in the accounting work at SPP.

YOU WILL HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Financial accounting principles and practices, financial management and analysis techniques;
  • Pension terminology and fundamentals, ideally including experience with the pension administration industry;
  • Strong knowledge of investment vehicles, asset classes (including level 3 investments), and risk assessment;
  • Financial management and analysis techniques;
  • Integrated financial information operating systems; and
  • Computer applications, such as, word processing, excel, e-mail and Windows.
Responsibilities
  • Performing all accounting, audit, investment, financial analysis and actuarial activities related to the Saskatchewan Pension Plan (SPP) including: statistical analysis, investment compliance and analysis, analyzing and interpreting statistical data, analyzing and calculating fund returns by asset class and fund type;
  • Reviewing and analyzing investment manager asset performance. Verifying accruals and adjusting entries. Reviewing investment reconciliations and determining if investment managers are in compliance within guidelines set out in the Statement of Investment Policy and Procedures;
  • Calculating rates of return and processing all investment transactions (i.e., buy, sell, investment income, market value changes) into the general ledger;
  • Assisting in production of financial statements and supporting notes required to compile the annual report for tabling in the Legislative Assembly;
  • Initiating improvements to the accounting or pension system to streamline accounting processes to improve efficiency, as well as overseeing any accounting system platform changes;
  • Assisting in the production of quarterly interim financial statements and audit investment reports produced by Investment Managers;
  • Maintaining internal controls, identifying and assisting in directing changes to the accounting systems and performing other accounting activities for SPP including balancing members’ accounts to the general ledger;
  • General supervision and training of staff involved in the accounting work at SPP, including assignment of duties, workload responsibilities and monitoring and evaluating performance; and
  • Communicating information of a technical nature and answering inquiries on the plan from both staff and members, as well as creating teaching materials regarding technical issues to assist staff and to be used in member communications.
