  POSITION TITLE: Senior Health, Safety (HS) Specialist LOCATION: North Bay, Ontario Salary: $85,000 - $95,000 per year Purpose of Role: Working closely with the Plant Manager and Site Leadership Team, the Senior Health and Safety Specialist has overall responsibility for managing health and safety improvement activities at the site. This is a “greenfield” site, and this role will play a critical role in creating and sustaining a bespoke safety culture aligned to MacLean’s core values and priorities. It will lead the creation, development, implementation, continuous improvement and promotion of strategies, procedures and systems to achieve sustainable health and safety excellence by reducing injuries and illnesses as measured in the core KPI’s. This role also supports other regional satellite sites in coordination with the broader Health and Safety team.  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Deploy the MacLean corporate H&S strategy, policy, systems and standards in the site to achieve sustainable results and develop new standards that can be replicated across the MacLean Network. * Influence and partner with senior leadership and drive health and safety leadership through line management through active engagement, coaching, and partnering. * Act as the site Superuser for the MacLean Academy, Learning Management System (LMS) ensuring content is assigned, tracked and completed – evaluate opportunities to optimize training compliance and improve effectiveness of training delivery.  * Evaluate existing content, and develop new content for online training, using Articulate software * Coordinate and assess effectiveness of orientation and training activities, use data from safety observations, inspections and incidents to improve effectiveness of critical onboarding activities * Collaborate with site leadership to create monthly Safety Talks and support Supervisors in delivering this content through participation and regular attendance  * Audit and lead action plans by evaluating program elements (Emergency Response, Machine-guarding, LOTO, Contractor Management, WHMIS, First Aid etc.) through observation, interviews, surveys, and documentation review. * Ensure systems, processes and procedures are in place for early identification and reporting of hazards including appropriate change management with business stakeholders  * Develop and support Job Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments, advising on opportunities for improvement and process/procedure development * Develop and create action plans including coordinating Focus Groups with managers, supervisors and employees to control high-risk hazards * Use H&S data (leading and lagging indicators) to provide in-depth analytics and insights to site leadership to guide the health and safety program * Review incident investigations and associated trends; Assist supervisors in identifying “root cause”, appropriate corrective actions, and with follow up on actions * Draft and submit WSIB reporting, advocate for and assist leaders with return-to-work process (modified duties documentation, meet with employees, follow-up on cases) * Provide support to Joint Health, Safety Committee and create health and safety content and update communication boards or digital tools  * Stay current with legislation changes and ensure organization complies with, and implements, standards, technical documents, policies and procedures  * Organize and execute appropriate H&S monitoring (air/noise/heat assessments and medical surveillance) and use it to improve safety programs * Perform ergonomic assessments, research and recommend suitable tools/ equipment  * Collaborate with H&S Specialists and Site leadership in other sites to support standardization and “best practice” implementation.  * Travel required between MacLean site and to attend training and conferences as required * Mentor team members and coop students as required * QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE Education * Health, Safety related certificate, diploma, degree, or equivalent Experience * Five or more years working in a Health and Safety role required  * Previous experience in a manufacturing environment as well as experience with implementing new safety program in a “greenfield” site is an asset  Skills * Fluency in both English and French is preferred  * Detailed-oriented and highly organized  * Team-oriented, positive attitude, high aptitude, humble and willingness to learn * Excellent written and verbal communication * Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office * Self-motivated; able to schedule priorities as assigned and working with minimal direct supervision * Well-developed analytical and critical thinking skills * Creative and innovative with focus on problem solving Working Conditions * Office (daily) * Plant (daily) Planned Training * HR Orientation * HSE Orientation Bona fide Occupational Requirements * Must be able to complete all required training EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY ☒Full Time ☐Part Time ☐Temporary ☐Permanent ☐Contract HOURS OF WORK: ☒Day Shift ☐Afternoon Shift ☐Weekend Shift ☐Overtime may be necessary to meet deadlines About Us: Founded in 1973 in Ontario, Canada, MacLean Engineering is the world’s largest Canadian-based manufacturer of underground mining equipment.
