KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, related field or equivalent work experience required.
  • Professional HR designation (e.g., CHRP, CHRL, or CPHR) strongly preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 3 years in a unionized environment.
  • Strong understanding of HR business partnership, organizational effectiveness, and workforce planning.
  • Advanced knowledge of Canadian labor legislation, employment standards, and unionized workplace practices.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting collective bargaining negotiations and administering collective agreements.
  • Skilled in coaching and advising leaders on employee and labor relations, performance management, and career development.
  • Strong communication, influencing, and conflict resolution skills; able to build trust with leaders, employees, and union representatives.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to use data to inform decisions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS systems, Dayforce experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to balance strategic and tactical work.
    Willingness to travel within Canada (up to 25%) and work flexible hours during negotiations or high-demand periods.
Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) – Canada acts as a trusted advisor to business leaders, balancing broad HR partnership responsibilities with a strong focus on supporting unionized environments. Approximately half of this role is dedicated to labor relations, including collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance management, while the other half spans the full scope of HR generalist activities such as workforce planning, talent development, performance management, and employee engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead and support collective bargaining preparation, negotiations, and contract implementation.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to managers on interpretation and application of collective agreements.
  • Partner with union representatives and leaders to maintain constructive labor-management relationships.
  • Manage grievance and arbitration processes, ensuring timely, fair, and compliant resolutions.
  • Track and analyze LR metrics (e.g., grievance trends, arbitration outcomes, absenteeism) and recommend proactive solutions.
  • Provide training and coaching for leaders on contract administration, performance management in unionized contexts, and dispute resolution.
  • Partner with Canadian business leaders to design and execute people strategies that support workforce planning, organizational effectiveness, and talent priorities.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to managers and employees on performance management, employee development, and workplace culture.
  • Support HR programs and initiatives including employee engagement, inclusion & diversity, leadership development, and succession planning.
  • Lead and/or participate in investigations, ensuring consistent, fair, and confidential resolution of workplace issues.
  • Provide back-up support to the HRBP responsible for full-cycle recruitment, including interviewing and onboarding as needed.
  • Assist in developing and delivering employee training programs in partnership with the HRBP and HR leadership.
  • Support compensation and performance review processes, ensuring consistency and fairness.
  • Partner with Payroll and HR operations to ensure accurate employee records and smooth HR transactions.
  • Collaborate with HR colleagues across North America on cross-functional initiatives and projects.
