REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college (BSEE strongly preferred)
  • Ten (10) years minimum experience in HVDC system, FACTS, industrial, renewable, or utility HV & EHV substation design and commissioning.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time, including international, and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies.

Responsibilities

The Senior Electrical HVDC Application Engineer is responsible for leading all aspects of HV/EHV substation design and execution, ensuring technical excellence, quality, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Define and manage the HVDC engineering quality plan with the Project Engineering Manager (PEM); ensure adherence to the Engineering Management Handbook (EMH).
  • Serve as the technical lead during the Inquiry-to-Order (ITO) phase, coordinating with the HVDC Product Delivery Group (PDG) in Stafford, UK, and North America teams to develop technically and economically sound solutions.
  • Lead technical scope development, including system configuration, performance estimation, and cost analysis; interface closely with commercial teams.
  • Ensure on-time, high-quality delivery of project deliverables under the PDG scope; lead design reviews and change control processes.
  • Provide technical leadership for the design, integration, and execution of AC/DC substation projects, including equipment layout, grounding, cable routing, and control buildings.
  • Coordinate efforts across engineering disciplines, sourcing, and project management to meet cost, schedule, and specification requirements.
  • Lead and guide engineering teams by setting clear expectations and reviewing deliverables; identify and engage key stakeholders to align on execution strategy.
  • Oversee development of bid packages, technical specifications, scope of work documents, and vendor evaluations for high-voltage equipment and subcontracted services.
  • Review and ensure compliance with customer specifications through clause-by-clause technical assessments.
  • Collaborate with the Proposal Manager to prepare full EPC estimates and proposals for utility, industrial, renewable, and HVDC-related projects.
  • Support customer-facing technical presentations and proposal reviews; augment commercial efforts with engineering insights.
  • Track and manage engineering schedules and deliverables to ensure on-time delivery and project success.
  • Review and validate the design quality plan for all engineering work within the PDG scope.
