Primary objective
Perform accurate and efficient routine testing of water samples using standard methods within a quality assurance
framework.
Context statement
The laboratory provides ‘fee-for-service’ testing and is accredited under National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA).
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Conduct chemical and physical analysis of water and wastewater samples in accordance with NATA accreditation
requirements and established procedures utilising substantial knowledge and experience in instrumentation such as
spectrometry, automated analysis, ion-selective electrodes.
2. Utilise the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for management of workflows and quality program
monitoring as a senior operator and work area coordinator.
3. Undertake and manage tasks related to the laboratory equipment management program, involving scheduled
maintenance and checking of laboratory equipment.
4. Manage workflows, prioritise and assign tasks and supervise and support personnel for area of responsibility.
5. Participate in quality assurance and accreditation programs by providing substantive contributions to management and
compliance with systems and undertaking internal audits.
6. Review, authorise and report sample results to clients under protocols of laboratory quality procedures as an authorised
person and undertake duties related to client liaison and business administration.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant qualification, awarded by an Australian Institution, or equivalent, or significant experience in chemistry,
relevant to water analysis.
2. Demonstrated high-level skills and knowledge relevant to chemical and physical analysis in a quality assurance
environment.
3. Substantial experience working in a laboratory environment, which adheres to quality system compliance, equipment
maintenance, and checking and instrumentation performance investigation under accreditation standards.
4. Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to work in a collaborative and cooperative manner, to train
and supervise staff, and liaise with clients.
5. Proven ability to work independently and effectively prioritise tasks to meet work unit deadlines and workload demands
and drive efficient outcomes.
6. Well-developed skills in desktop computer applications used for task management, data handling and document editing,
including ability to understand and utilise a LIMS as an advanced user.
Desirable
1. Substantial experience with LIMS as a system advanced user or administrator
