This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Landscape Architect to join Mace’s responsible business team in the UK and support our growing external grounds team based in one of our regional offices (London, Winchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester or Leeds).
This position is ideal for a Chartered Landscape Architect who is experienced in project leadership, design and delivery, with a good holistic understanding of landscape and biodiversity, and a basic knowledge of sustainability aligned with current and future trends in the built environment.
Candidates will need to progress through the security clearance process.
Hybrid/remote working is supported with travel to sites across the region to support the team needs.

Integrated into the programme partner team, alongside design, equipment and construction partners, the successful candidate will lead environment/sustainability workstreams, providing landscape expertise for a range of disciplines, and will be responsible for design and delivery of the programme-wide landscape architecture outcomes. This will include delivery of landscape design, processes and procedures as well as driving high standards of contractor environmental performance.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Lead the landscape design and assessment for our key client the department for education (DfE) through all LI/RIBA stages.
  • Author landscape and visual impact assessments.
  • Preparation of landscape strategies/plans/drawings and planting strategies.
  • Undertake urban greening factor (UGF) calculations.
  • Landscape Architect Technical Advisor role which includes reviewing consultant and contractor design proposals against client and planning requirements.
  • Participate in workshops with design teams, promoting a landscape led approach and nature-based solutions.
  • Support ecologists with biodiversity net gain (BNG) delivery.
  • Develop a strong working relationship with our internal architecture and urban design teams.
  • Work with our external partners/sub-consultants which will include commissioning additional landscape services, prepare technical scopes and develop strong working relationships with them.
  • Work with construction project teams to deliver best practice in terms of protecting and enhancing the landscape and supporting them with specific queries - translating technical requirements into layperson language to ensure all stakeholders understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Liaison with various stakeholders including developers, local authorities, landowners, NGOs.
  • Work-winning through bids, solutioning, client liaison and raising Mace’s profile externally. This will include developing Mace’s nature-based solutions service offer.
  • Manage junior team members where necessary.
  • Build the external grounds team including hiring junior landscape architects, mentoring through chartership as required.

You’ll need to have:

  • Degree level qualification in Landscape Architecture or recognised equivalent.
  • Postgraduate diploma/master’s qualification in Landscape Architecture or recognised equivalent.
  • Chartered member of the landscape institute (CMLI).
  • Excellent technical skills and proficiency in Autodesk, Adobe Creative Suite and ArcGIS.
  • Full UK Driving License.

You’ll also have:

  • A confident professional with drive and ambition.
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary planning and design with an interest in the education sector.
  • Excellent written communication with an eye for detail.
  • Established track record of successfully delivering landscape and urban design projects, from initial site analysis and concept design through to detailed design including the production of information for planning and construction.
  • Landscape design for BNG and experience (but not essential) in UGF calculations.
  • Working as a landscape architect on building projects, masterplans and city centre public realm regeneration projects.
  • Developing green infrastructure strategies.
  • Authoring landscape and visual impact appraisals and assessments.
  • Technical know-how, and experience of working with contractors and managing landscape design during the construction phase.
  • Experience of understanding client requirements and developing scope and fee proposals.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the UK legal and planning system with respect to landscape architecture.
  • Undertaking a technical advisory landscape architecture role which includes reviewing contractor design proposals against client and planning requirements is preferable.
  • Be proficient in Adobe Suite, AutoCAD and standard Microsoft packages. It would be advantageous (though not essential) for the candidate to have experience working with Revit & GIS software.
