JOB TITLE: LEGAL ACCOUNTANT JOB SUMMARY:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Legal Accountant to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for handling all accounting functions related to the legal practice, including managing client trust accounts, overseeing billing processes, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This position requires strong accounting skills and knowledge of legal industry practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or similar certification is a plus.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of accounting experience, preferably within a law firm or legal setting.
  • Familiarity with legal billing systems (e.g., Time Matters, or similar legal accounting software) is highly preferred.
  • Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and accounting software.
  • Knowledge of trust account management and legal billing practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with attorneys, clients, and other departments.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to operate office equipment (e.g., computer, fax machine, copier).
Responsibilities
  • Financial Management:
  • Prepare and manage financial statements for the legal department or law firm.
  • Oversee client billing, including preparation of invoices, monitoring receivables, and managing collections.
  • Maintain detailed records of client trust accounts and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for trust fund management.
  • Compliance and Reporting:
  • Ensure all accounting activities comply with legal and regulatory standards (e.g., the ABA’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct and state bar regulations).
  • Prepare reports for internal stakeholders and external auditors as needed.
  • Work closely with external auditors for annual audits and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
  • Payroll and Taxes:
  • Manage payroll for legal professionals, including attorneys, paralegals, and support staff.
  • Ensure that payroll tax filings and payments are made on time and accurately.
  • File necessary financial documents (e.g., tax returns, financial reports).
  • Budgeting and Financial Planning:
  • Assist in budget preparation for the legal department or law firm.
  • Provide financial forecasting and analysis to support business decisions.
  • Monitor cash flow, accounts payable, and accounts receivable to ensure smooth operations.
  • Client and Case Financial Management:
  • Maintain accurate records for client-specific financial matters, including payments, fees, and case-related expenses.
  • Review and reconcile billing discrepancies for clients and work with attorneys to resolve issues.
  • Billing and Accounts Receivable:
  • Manage billing for legal services, ensuring invoices are timely and accurate.
  • Handle disputes or concerns related to billing, working closely with clients and attorneys to resolve issues.
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are tracked and collections procedures are in place for overdue payments.
  • Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Provide general accounting and administrative support as needed.
  • Assist in the implementation of accounting software and other financial tools.
