Senior Legal Counsel, Privacy and Data An exciting opportunity for a dedicated privacy lawyer in one of Australia’s leading banks. Highly autonomous role in a dynamic team. You will have broad exposure across the CBA Group and manage a broad range of privacy law matters. Hybrid working arrangements available. As a Senior Legal Counsel advising on privacy and data matters, your work will include: Providing privacy law advice on complex and high impact matters across the entire CBA Group. Strategic input on banking industry consultations, initiatives and advocacy on emerging laws in privacy, digital identity, and the Consumer Data Right. Advising on privacy and data governance risks and opportunities for Group AI projects and partnerships. Leading the Legal and Group Secretariat engagement with the OAIC (including data breach notification, preliminary inquiries, conciliations and investigations). Do work that matters: Work as a senior member of the legal team, providing specialist privacy advice to CBA’s business units, regarding new products, compliance, transactions and international activities. Lead effective and proactive engagement with key stakeholders and senior management across the Group; provide insights on privacy and data risk and clear and actionable recommendations to mitigate that risk. Where necessary, manage external legal engagement on specific matters, transactions or regulatory responses. Actively contribute to team culture excelling in customer service, simplifying processes and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. Where opportunities arise, lead, mentor and develop the team’s Legal Counsel/Junior Legal Counsels. We’re interested in hearing from people with: Minimum 6 years PQE with a current practising certificate. Deep experience in complex privacy advisory matters, including advice on significant initiatives, products and processes involving customer data. Experience advising regulated industries (banking, energy, telecommunications) or those with large customer data sets (loyalty programs, supermarkets, aviation) will be beneficial. Experience advising on international privacy laws, Consumer Data Right matters, digital identity / identity verification matters, complex data breach incidents, data analytics projects and ad tech is preferred (but not essential). Strong technical legal, analytical and statutory interpretation skills and exceptional written and verbal communication. A demonstrated ability to build and influence trusted relationships across large and varied stakeholder groups, then partner with those groups to drive commercial outcomes.
