Description:
Senior Legal Counsel - Development
Working at Transurban is different; it’s a place where you can see the benefits of your work play out in real life, every day. We create city-sized solutions—building and operating safer, smarter, and more sustainable roads—to solve pressing transport challenges that are slowing cities down.
About the role
We’re seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to play a pivotal role in the growth of Transurban, providing strategic legal advice on major project development opportunities (including enhancements and augmentations of existing assets, as well as in respect of new developments). Your internal clients are sophisticated and collaborative, and welcome considered pragmatic legal advice. You will ensure that legal obligations are met, and legal risks managed, while seeking maximum alignment with Transurban’s business objectives and protection of our interests and reputation.
You’ll join an innovative team, who thrive on building strong and effective relationships with people at all levels.
As one of our Senior Legal Counsels, you’ll contribute to lasting and positive changes that shape the future of our cities and communities. It’s meaningful, challenging and exciting work.
The position will preferably be based in Brisbane, but Sydney and Melbourne locations will also be considered.
Day-to-day, you will:
- You’ll provide strategic legal advice to the Group on major project and other development matters as required, including major project opportunities and documentation, commercial frameworks and proposals, procurement strategy and contract interpretation and administration
- You’ll assist with related negotiations and the drafting of project documentation
- You’ll ensure the Group’s objectives are met when negotiating, advising on, drafting and reviewing agreements
- You’ll take a proactive approach to managing legal risk including anticipating issues, proposing solutions early, and participating in regular business team meetings
This role will suit someone with a curious mind and transferrable skills and experiences, including:
- You’ll have highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to successfully engage, negotiate and deal tactfully and effectively with people in challenging circumstances
- You’ll be 8+ years post qualification experience within a law firm or relevant experience within the corporate sector, and experience in construction and major project development
- You’ll bring your experience in developing and negotiating contracts for construction and other major projects (including Project Deeds, D&C Contracts, Contractor Side Deeds and other ancillary agreements)
- You’ll have an understanding of development and construction risks, and associated risk allocation principles, along with an understanding of PPP /project financed delivery models, D&C contracts and collaborative contracting models
- You’re commercial, engaging, and a natural builder of relationships - you’ll enjoy getting on the front foot, embedding yourself in the business and connecting with stakeholders
If you meet some of these requirements, but not all, we encourage you to submit your application.
With a career at Transurban, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits, including:
- A range of flexible working and leave options, including the option to purchase an additional six weeks of leave each year
- 16 weeks paid parental leave (regardless of gender or carer status), with no waiting period, with Superannuation paid during unpaid leave as well
- Learning and development opportunities to support your career interests
- Health and wellbeing support—access to Headspace and our EAP program, wellness facilities, and more
- Share offers and insurance benefits
- Social activities, community give-back programs and paid volunteer days
We offer a range of flexible working and leave options, so you can balance your work and life commitments and interests. Have a conversation with us about how this could work for you.
We embrace diversity with a foundation of safety, wellbeing and inclusion; where everyone belongs. We treat everyone with fairness, consideration and respect, regardless of gender, gender identity, marital or family status, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, religious beliefs, cultural or socio-economic background, perspective, and experience – whether they work for us or not. We want to ensure everyone feels comfortable and safe to express ideas, questions and concerns.
We strongly encourage applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people living with disability.
