We are seeking a highly experienced and proactive Senior Litigation Assistant to join our legal team. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional providing high-level support to our litigation lawyers. This role is critical for managing the workflow of our litigation practice and requires exceptional organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the proven ability to manage a high-volume caseload and with minimal supervision.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Legal Administrative Assistant Certificate or Paralegal Diploma is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience as a Legal Assistant, with a primary focus on civil litigation.
  • Expert-level proficiency in BC Court Rules and procedures, including Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
  • Advanced skills in BC Online, Court Services Online (CSO), and the Land Title and Survey Authority (LTSA) systems.
  • Proven expertise in drafting a wide range of litigation documents with minimal direction.
  • Exceptional proofreading skills and an attention to detail.
  • Superior organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and legal accounting software (ESI/Unity).
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging with a professional audience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience supporting trial and family law counsel.
  • Experience in other practice areas is an asset.

Responsibilities
  • Case Management: Take primary responsibility for the day-to-day management of litigation files from inception through to trial and appeal.
  • Court Document Preparation: Draft, prepare, and proofread complex legal documents, including Statements of Claim, Statements of Defence, Affidavits, Lists of Documents, Motion Records, and Trial Records with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency.
  • E-Filing & Procedures: Expertly manage all aspects of e-filing through the BC Court Services Online (CSO) portal and other government platforms. Ensure strict adherence to court rules and procedures, including deadlines and service requirements.
  • Discovery & Trial Preparation: Management of the discovery trial preparation process, including coordinating calendars for counsel and opposing counsel, preparing and managing document production. Provide comprehensive support for trial preparation, including organizing trial exhibits, coordinating with witnesses, and assisting counsel at trial as needed.
  • Client Interaction: Serve as a contact for clients, opposing counsel, and external agencies, demonstrating professional and clear communication.
  • Calendar & Deadline Management: Proactively manage critical litigation deadlines (limitation periods, filing deadlines, discovery dates). Coordinate schedules for hearings, discoveries, and meetings.
  • File Management: Conduct conflict searches, open new client files, and possess advanced knowledge of ESI Law/Unity Accounting for time entry, billing, and trust transactions.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to junior legal assistants and staff within the firm.
