Description

Reporting to the Director, Budget and Financial Planning (the “Director"), the Sr Manager, Budget and Financial Planning (the " Sr Manager") is responsible for overseeing key financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, finance business partnering, reporting, and analysis.
This position plays a critical role in strategic decision-making by collaborating with leaders and teams across the college to develop and implement analytics, tools, reports, and performance metrics to enhance budget processes and resource optimization.
The Sr Manager is responsible for complex financial modelling and multi-year planning to ensure that financial decisions are aligned with institutional strategies and priorities.
The Sr Manager provides project management support for financial initiatives and drives process improvements to strengthen and streamline financial operations.
The Sr Manager leads a team of Finance Business Partners, who support financial management across all Sheridan’s business units, through effective recruitment, coaching, developing, motivating, evaluating and succession planning, and providing backup to team members.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 4-year bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration/Commerce or a related field.
  • Minimum 7 years related and progressively responsible accounting experience, including: financial accounting, budget and management/cost accounting.
  • Must have CPA designation.
  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders of all levels.
  • Must have demonstrated skill in quantitative financial analysis and budgetary control, with thorough working knowledge of general accounting principles and practices with emphasis on fund accounting and college financial accounting.
  • Must have solid financial and analytical skills, including experience with budgets and forecasts, financial modelling and scenario planning, variance analysis, reconciliations and financial reviews, financial statement preparation, cost analysis and funded project reporting and administration.
  • Must have advanced Excel spreadsheet skills; Mastery in the creation of complex budgeting/financial/scenario models.
  • Must have current knowledge of: Canadian GAAP including Public Sector Accounting standards and financial compliance: e.g. GAAP.
  • Must have strong management skills / leadership experience with financial accounting teams.
  • Must have experience leading cross-functional projects and process improvements within financial functions.
  • PeopleSoft experience is preferred.
  • Experience leading in a unionized environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Leading the day-to-day operations of the budget and financial planning functions, including the annual budget development process, by directly managing and developing a diverse team of Finance Business Partners to achieve accurate and timely budgeting and forecasting for the organization.
  • Ensuring that the budget team is fully supporting their portfolio of clients in continual efforts to assist with financial management and business decision making and improve organizational financial literacy. Including supporting the preparation for, and creating the materials required, for Budget Committee meetings.
  • Developing and improving financial planning processes and systems to optimize and standardize the processes and tools used by the team and organization, ensuring data integrity, operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Working with cross-functional teams in support of this work and implementation through appropriate communication, training and change management with stakeholders.
  • Supporting the development of business cases and financial models in coordination with other stakeholders to assess opportunities and challenges and make appropriate recommendations for action. This includes, but is not limited to multi-year financial plans, new program and other revenue generation opportunities, tuition and other fees, etc.
  • Overseeing the fulfilment of organizational financial obligations by working with the Finance Business Partners and business units to meet reporting deadlines for externally funded projects and meet ministry guidelines for spending grant funds and other institutional fees in appropriate ways.
  • Managing and coordinating the budget team’s work during interim financial period closes, the annual audit and other special audits as needed.Performing other duties and responsibilities, ad-hoc financial projects, reports and analysis, as required by the business.
