REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Seven years of work experience as an accountant
  • Experience as an accounting manager or similar full-charge accounting function &/or experience as a financial auditor, especially in audits of not-for-profit organizations
  • Experience as a supervisor
  • Expert-level ability in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting and preparation of Form 990

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Certified Public Accounting (CPA) accreditation may substitute for not having a major in Accounting – however undergraduate degree should show a GPA of 3.5 towards major and overall.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

This person will have:

  • Experience accounting for endowed funds with donor restrictions
  • Experience working with Blackbaud Financial Edge
  • Strong organizational skills
  • A proven ability to produce results in a highly deadline-oriented environment
  • Strong analytical ability with the interpersonal skills needed to communicate, apply good judgement, discretion, confidentiality, patience and understanding necessary for dealing effectively with a diverse body of professional colleagues and staff
  • The ability to work in a collaborative environment not only within our Foundation, but also between Foundation and Hospital staff

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards and their implications on Foundation activities and reporting
  • Manage the general ledger and be responsible for its overall design, structure, improvements, upgrades and integration with other systems
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and other reports, including statements prepared for Board of Trustees and specific reports created for departmental managers and used in internal functions
  • Perform the accounting and reporting for select functions including fixed assets, endowment funds (including distributions and allocation of Children’s Hospital Colorado Health System’s investment activity), Foundation short-term investments, stock gifts and pledges receivable
  • Prepare electronic payments to vendors
  • Supervise or perform various reconciliations, including amounts due to and from the Foundation’s related entities
  • Manage special projects in support of improved efficiency and service to donors, colleagues, and Hospital finance partners
  • Review and approve journal entries prepared by other accounting staff
  • Assist with the recording of gifts from Children’s Miracle Network
  • Serve as back-up for various procedures performed by other accounting staff
  • Oversee compliance with all regulatory and licensing authorities
  • In consultation with the SVP of Finance and Accounting, establish priorities, metrics, and goals related to the overall management of the Foundation’s accounting department
  • Lead month-end and year-end closing processes
  • Monitor reporting deadlines to ensure compliance
  • Lead selected aspects of the budgeting process including consolidation and preparation of reports and data utilized; support and assist departmental managers in the preparation of their own budgets
  • Lead the preparation of reports and data required for the annual financial statement audit including coordination with Children’s Hospital Colorado’s finance team and internal Foundation employees, review reports prepared by others for accuracy, and complete selected footnotes
  • Lead the collection of information needed to complete the annual Form 990
  • Assist in the management of banking and investment relationships
  • Analyze and forecast the need for operating liquidity
  • Respond to peer benchmarking surveys, including Woodmark annual survey
  • Report stale checks to the Great Colorado Payback
  • Ensure accounting policies, processes and procedures have been documented and that documentation is up to date
  • Assist or lead in other assigned finance and accounting projects as needed
  • Provide clear objectives and performance measures for Finance & Accounting staff
  • Oversee and review accuracy of work prepared by staff including journal entries and reconciliations
  • Perform or support and oversee content training of new Foundation team members on applicable finance and accounting functions (payment requests, cash receipts processing, corporate credit cards, etc.)
  • Respond to inquiries from Hospital partners and Foundation colleagues regarding financial activities and balances in a timely and accurate manner
