Description

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL BE ABLE TO JOIN THE OCTOPUS AUSTRALIA TEAM ON THEIR MISSION TO ACCELERATE AUSTRALIA’S TRANSITION TO A FUTURE POWERED BY RENEWABLE ENERGY.

We are seeking a senior commercial leader to drive our energy contracting strategy and originate long-term revenue agreements for renewable and firmed energy products. This role will focus on identifying, developing, and executing power purchase agreements (PPAs), retail and structured contracts with energy buyers including large corporates, industrials, and electricity retailers.
As the Senior Manager of Portfolio Origination, you will take ownership of the full origination lifecycle – from market strategy and buyer engagement through to commercial negotiation and contract execution. The role requires regular domestic travel to engage with clients, partners, and stakeholders across Australia.
You will play a critical role in shaping our commercial position in the energy market, ensuring the bankability of new and existing projects, and building deep, trusted relationships with senior decision-makers in the market.

Job Description

  • Lead the origination and execution of tailored energy contracts across a diverse range of buyers—including corporates, retailers, and aggregators—delivering unique, commercially innovative solutions such as firmed renewables, hybrid offerings, and bespoke structured products.
  • Identify, build, and maintain deep relationships with senior leaders across large energy users, electricity retailers, and intermediaries to create a strong, high-conviction pipeline of opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain a national buyer network to support project commercialisation and market expansion.
  • Own the end-to-end contracting process, including deal structuring, pricing, negotiation, and execution.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal stakeholders across Project Development, Investment, Legal, Technical, and Energy Markets to align on deal parameters and risk positions.
  • Lead development of commercial offer materials, term sheets, and contract documentation.
  • Monitor energy market trends, regulatory developments, and customer demand to refine origination strategy and commercial offerings.
  • Support internal investment approval processes, including preparation of commercial cases, board papers, and executive briefings.
  • Represent the organisation at external events, industry forums, and client engagements, building the company’s presence and reputation in the market.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 8+ years of experience in energy contract origination, corporate PPA negotiation, or structured energy product sales.
  • Demonstrated track record of closing complex commercial energy transactions with large buyers or retailers.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain deep, senior-level relationships across the Australian energy landscape.
  • Deep understanding of electricity markets, renewable energy projects, and contract structures (e.g., PPA, sleeved, firmed, retail).
  • Well-established network in the Australian energy market with strong commercial relationships across the buyer landscape.
  • Strategic mindset with ability to translate market insights into actionable commercial strategies.
  • Strong financial acumen and ability to evaluate and articulate risk/return profiles of various deal structures.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex negotiations simultaneously while maintaining stakeholder alignment.
  • Degree qualified in Finance, Commerce, Engineering, Law, or related discipline – MBA or equivalent postgrad credentials advantageous.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • High level of initiative and commercial ownership.
  • Willingness to travel domestically as required.
