WHO WE ARE
ACC is one of the nation’s largest open-admission animal shelters, whose mission is to End Animal Homelessness in NYC. We touch the lives of nearly 30,000 animals each year. ACC is more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the community, always seeking ways to keep the human-animal bond intact. With a 90% placement rate, our progressive, life-saving initiatives contribute to the successful placement of our animals.
We strive to find loving homes for homeless and abandoned cats, dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits, both by adopting animals directly to the public and by partnering with more than 200 dedicated animal placement organizations (our New Hope partners). We also help keep NYC communities safe and rescue animals in need, responding to emergencies that involve animals as well as keeping our doors open 24/7 for people and animals in need.
Summary
The Veterinary Services Team at ACC is responsible for the health of all animals in our care. The team manages all spectrums of medical acuity from complex disease states to surgical interventions for all shelters. Each shelter medical treatment area is fully equipped with lab equipment, x-rays and ultrasound and is supported by a dedicated team of veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians and knowledgeable support staff.
Under the direction of the Director of Animal Health, the Sr. Manager, Veterinary Operations (SMVO) oversees and supports the resources and para-professional personnel of the Veterinary Services department for all shelter medical operations. Working with other senior leadership, the SMVO will ensure that the Veterinary Services team integrates with all other departments working in concert to provide all our patients with the timely care that they need throughout their journey to their new home. Through this collaboration of efforts, the SMVO strengthens interdepartmental team work and communication through leadership, mentoring and problem solving. With guidance from the Director of Animal Health and Director of Shelter Medicine, the SMVO ensures that the department is meeting all of its strategic initiatives, staff competencies and standards of care.
Each day brings a different challenge and the SMVO will successfully navigate issues not only related to animal care but with human resources, law and ethics, customer service as well as keeping the team organized and efficient. The successful SMVO can balance many different elements of management as well as be resourceful, excellent with time management, able to mediate conflicts with team members, be detail oriented, have initiative and an excellent bed side manner. This position requires the advanced skills of a Licensed Veterinary Technician to ensure our standards of care are met and or exceeded. The SMVO directly supervises the Veterinary Team Managers on each site, providing them with the resources they need to be successful. The success and cohesion of the Veterinary Services team is a direct correlation to leadership of the Senior Manager, Veterinary Operations.
