Hours: Monday to Friday, day shifts
Location: Nottinghamshire
Company: This is a long-established engineering business at the forefront of rail and logistics manufacturing. From their Nottinghamshire site, they design, build, and adapt large, heavy-duty products including wagons, containers, and specialist equipment. With full in-house capability. from design and prototyping to manufacture and approval. They deliver practical, high-quality engineering solutions that keep the industry moving.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead mechanical design projects from concept through to completion, producing accurate technical specifications and calculations.
  • Act as the key technical contact for customers, ensuring designs meet requirements, compliance standards, and safety regulations.
  • Carry out proof and fatigue finite element analysis (FEA), design verification, and approve calculations from other engineers.
  • Develop 3D models, manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials in line with company quality standards.
  • Run design reviews with internal teams and clients.
  • Support production, purchasing, and wider departments to ensure designs are practical, economical, and deliver value.
  • Drive continuous improvement across design processes and systems.
  • Provide technical coaching and mentoring to less experienced engineers.

Requirements:

  • An experienced Mechanical Design Engineer, ideally within heavy fabrication or large-scale engineering.
  • Strong background in structural calculations, proof and fatigue FEA, and engineering standards.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Excellent knowledge of design for manufacture and fabrication processes.
  • Skilled in SolidWorks 3D CAD and ideally with PDM experience.
  • Familiarity with railway vehicles, systems, and standards (desirable but not essential).
  • Confident communicator, able to work independently or lead small project teams.
  • Working towards or already holding professional registration (e.g. IMechE).
