Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

SCITEK are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Mechanical Designer to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in mechanical design, a strong technical background, and a passion for innovation. The Senior Mechanical Designer will be responsible for leading the design and development of complex mechanical systems and components, ensuring compliance with industry standards and customer requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years’ experience in mechanical design, especially for manufactured parts and test rigs.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD software.
  • Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing techniques, and relevant industry standards.
  • Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Demonstrate problem-solving ability and keen attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Able to work independently, collaborate across disciplines, and mentor junior team members.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Background in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, or research and development (R&D).
  • Expertise in designing pipework and structural frameworks, including performing flange connection calculations.
  • Skilled in developing Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • General understanding of electrical systems and software/control equipment integration.
Responsibilities

Design and Development:

  • Develop detailed mechanical designs, models, and drawings using SolidWorks CAD.
  • Ensure designs meet project, functional, performance, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Perform tolerance analysis, material selection, and stress calculations.
  • Review of technical documentation and check engineering drawings.
  • Specify equipment and obtain supplier quotations

Project Leadership and Management:

  • Lead internal and external design reviews; provide technical direction to team members.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including software/control engineers, electrical engineers, and technicians/manufacturing engineers.
  • Manage multiple projects, prioritising tasks, and ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Liaise with customers, suppliers, and external service providers.

Quality & Compliance:

  • Conduct prototype testing and validate designs against specifications.·
  • Troubleshoot design issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and safety requirements.

Documentation:

  • Prepare project proposals, timing plans and costings for potential projects.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including BOMs, assembly instructions, user manuals, test procedures, risk assessments and UKCA compliance files.
  • Keep design records and databases up to date.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in mechanical design tools.
  • Identify opportunities for design and manufacturing process improvements and cost reduction.
