Description
Company Overview Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service. Overview About the Team: Joby’s Infrastructure team is a diverse group of architects, planners, engineers, and builders delivering the vertiports and infrastructure that turn our aircraft into a safe, scalable, world-class service. We are seeking a Senior Mechanical/Structural Engineer to join our highly innovative team developing deployable modular infrastructure to build vertiports at scale globally in dense urban environments. Working closely with our product, flight operations, and ground support equipment teams, we’re developing vertiport infrastructure designed for streamlined operations to maximize time savings for passengers, reinventing how infrastructure gets built and defining the future of aviation infrastructure. About the Role: The senior mechanical engineer will play a key role in developing vertiport infrastructure as a product that scales globally. You will rethink how vertiport terminals and electrified skydecks are designed and built, developing mechanisms, detailing connections and designing tooling that allow for rapid on-site assembly without high skilled labor or heavy lifting equipment. You will work with our structural, electrical and fire protection engineers to develop integrated systems to streamline deck electrification for aircraft charging, lighting, data, snow melt, and fire protection systems for elevated, floating and surface landing decks. You will drive innovation through prototype design, build and testing iteration to continually work towards optimized vertiport launch solutions. Responsibilities End-to-end project ownership through hosting design reviews, project decision justification, equipment procurement, and coordination and assistance with the construction of your ideas. Analyze, design, simulate, prototype and test modular hardware capable of being manufactured at volume for global networks of electrified skydecks. Apply interdisciplinary engineering skills in fields of system-level process design and initial sizing, detailed structural engineering, pressurized fluid and thermal analysis, materials, component selection and cost/schedule optimization. Utilize finite element method (FEM) software (i.e. CATIA, ANSYS, etc.) and rigorous hand calculations to facilitate detailed design. Work with product, flight operations, and ground support equipment engineers to understand requirements and develop systems from conception to activation. Perform calculations, simulations, and analyses to validate designs and ensure compliance with safety, reliability, and performance standards. Work directly with technicians and support groups to build your designs and troubleshoot problems. Required Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil-structural, aerospace or relevant engineering field. 5+ years of experience in mechanical/structural engineering design, manufacturing and/or construction. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, take initiative, and communicate effectively. Demonstrated expertise designing with steel, aluminum and/or advanced materials. Fundamental understanding of structural/mechanical systems. Demonstrated understanding of structural analysis and failure modes of complex mechanical systems and weldments. Ability to think creatively to collaborate across disciplines and departments in solving novel problems where few existing precedents, standards or methodologies exist. Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment managing multiple projects, with the ability to pivot to meet the dynamic needs of the company. Creativity to imagine and design for cost, reliability, efficiency and maintainability from scratch. Experience producing drawings for technicians, welders, and machine shops. Collaborative team player, eager to find the best solution while balancing cost and schedule. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Outcome driven and self-motivated with a positive attitude. Passion for aviation and advanced air mobility. Ability to travel up to 10% of the time, including limited international travel. Desired Master’s degree in mechanical, civil-structural, aerospace, or relevant engineering field. Experience designing kinetic structures. Experience in aviation. Professional Engineering license. Additional Information Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $143,000-243,000/yr.The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more. Joby is an Equal Opportunity Employer
