Overview Post Title: Senior Medical Scientist, Haematology Post Status: Temporary Specified Purpose Contract Department Haematology Location: Beaumont Hospital or other affiliated sites Reports to: Chief Medical Scientist Salary: Appointment will be made on the Senior Medical Scientist Scale (€68,007 - €89,790) at a point in line with Government pay policy Hours of work: 35 hours Closing Date: 12.00 noon on 17/02/2026 Please note the hospital reserves the right to close the competition early should a substantial number of applications be received. Responsibilities Principal Duties and Responsibilities: To perform his/her duties under the general direction of the Chief Medical Scientist. To perform all aspects of technical work to the highest standard. To supervise and provide guidance and support to medical scientists and medical laboratory assistants in the performance of their duties. To organise the technical programme so that work patterns are efficiently maintained. Participate in the selection, development, modification, validation and verification of methods To review, release, and report results To carry out routine inspections of laboratory equipment in his/her charge and to ensure that the equipment is properly maintained and kept in serviceable condition. To collaborate with the Chief Medical Scientist in the maintenance of efficiency and the introduction of new methods in the laboratory. To assist in implementing measures for the safety, health and welfare of all the staff. To assist in the training of student medical scientists, on call personnel, junior medical staff and visiting workers as required. To assist in maintaining the ISO15189 accredited status of the department. To represent the Chief Medical Scientist at meetings when required. To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up to date knowledge (CPD participation). To perform any other duties as may be appropriate to the grade. To cooperate with and support all project work undertaken in the Laboratory Directorate, to include, inter alia, the Laboratory Modernisation (LabMod) and MedLIS projects. Qualifications Selection Criteria: Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Candidates for appointment must possess: Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science from the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). Or Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). Or Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork – Cork Institute of Technology course AND Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Practice. Or Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) AND Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/Dublin Institute of Technology (Awarded prior to 2002). Or Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) AND BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences, University College Cork (UCC). (Awarded prior to 2013). Or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, (DIT) or the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) (Awarded prior to 1994). Or Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science awarded before 1997 by Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). Or An equivalent qualification validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM). And Possess one of the following NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualifications or equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine; MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology. MSc Clinical Chemistry, University of Dublin, Trinity College. MSc Biomedical Science, University of Ulster. MSc Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology / University College Cork. MSc Molecular Pathology, Dublin Institute of Technology / University of Dublin, Trinity College. Or Have attained the Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (Awarded prior to 1999). And Possess four years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of four years’ clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory since qualifying as a medical scientist. And (xii) Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development. And (b) Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office. And As of 31st March 2021 registration with CORU is required in order to practice as a medical scientist in Ireland. If an appointee has previously been employed in the Civil or Public Service and that appointee is entitled to or in receipt of a pension from the Civil or Public Service or where a Civil/ Public Service pension comes into payment during the appointee’s re-employment that pension will be subject to abatement in accordance with Section 52 of the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and other Provisions) Act 2012.
