WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO AS AN OPTICAL ENGINEER?
High-quality opto-mechanical systems are developed at TNO, with the Optics department playing a key role. We create breakthrough optical solutions for a healthier, safer, more sustainable and digital world, for challenging applications and demanding environments, together with our partners. We develop such solutions for the space and semiconductor industries, quantum technologies, structural health monitoring systems, medical applications and big science instruments domains.
The realization of these optical systems takes place by means of MAIT (Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration and Testing) processes using various tools. With a background in applied (optical) physics, you will be a senior engineer in precision optical techniques within the Optics department. This department consists of a team of 60 colleagues, with whom you will work closely. You will also be in regular contact with optical designers, optical manufacturers, thermal and mechanical engineers, and calibration and integration specialists within the Optics, Opto-Mechatronics, Quantum Technologies, Semicon Equipment and Space Systems Engineering departments.
As a senior optical engineer, you will be fulfilling a leading role in the entire process of realizing these optical systems. This starts with preparing advice for the customer about the feasibility of the optical system. Insight into the optical quality that can be achieved; the stability; the alignment and the testing are all important aspects in this assessment. Collaborating with your team, you will develop a comprehensive plan for realization, select the necessary tooling, and work alongside the Project Manager and Systems Engineer to estimate costs and lead times. During the hardware realization phase, you will monitor progress and oversee preparations for assembly, integration, and testing of the system. You will be responsible for the optical alignment and optical tests to verify the performance of the system with the help of advanced measuring techniques, including theodolites, interferometers, spectrometers, cameras and light sources. You will regularly and intensively discuss results, progress, deviations and possible improvements with the teams you operate in and report results to other stakeholders.
As a senior optical engineer you will lead high-end optical engineering tasks from a technical and organizational perspective. For this you will work a lot with colleagues from different disciplines and with high-end optical equipment. It is important that the stakeholders are kept up-to-date and that tests are carefully planned and executed. All of this will be your responsibility. To be able to perform the role well, it is important that you recognize yourself in the following profile:
