Why does the job exist?
The New Mexico Corrections Department Senior Paralegal is responsible for: providing paralegal and legal assistant services to the Office of General Counsel (OGC) representing the New Mexico
Corrections Department statewide by reviewing and preparing legal documents; calendaring deadlines; conducting basic legal research; communicating efficiently and professionally with agency staff and outside personnel, lawyers, and members of the public; facilitating Correction’s compliance to the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA); providing guidance and expertise to the Corrections Department and it constituents in support of compliance to the law; and maintaining legal files and other work assignments as requested by the OGC attorneys.
How does it get done?
Provide legal services in representing NMCD statewide by preparing legal documents, conducting legal research, maintaining files and establishing workflow.

Minimum Qualification
Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a Driver’s License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is
conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which may include daily contact with inmates. Willingness to
work in a correctional facility, may be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
