REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to rely on career experience to help make informed decisions and recommendations regarding contributing to delivering projects in your remit.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electronics) or related field; advanced degree or certification in IP management preferred.
  • Proven experience in intellectual property within product development companies, with a focus on patents.
  • Strong understanding of patent law and procedures in at least one or two jurisdictions (either US, EP, AU, or CN).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information effectively.
  • Ability to work autonomously and efficiently, managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational skills, including archiving and document management.
  • Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings and basic knowledge of CAD software.
  • Strategic thinker with a proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Passion for coffee and food, and a keen interest in understanding of the relevance between technology and food/beverage results.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a proactive and strategic Patent Attorney (2 years PQE) to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in managing and protecting Breville’s intellectual property related to Breville’s kitchen appliances. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and external partners to develop and execute effective IP strategies that support our business objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the primary focal point for protection of product development team’s inventions.
  • Evaluate the patentability of inventions and assist in preparing high quality invention disclosure forms.
  • Serve as the liaison between inventors and external counsel for patent preparation and prosecution, ensuring the broadest possible protection of Breville’s intellectual property, and ensure alignment with the portfolio strategy and patent filings.
  • Support the product development process to identify new technologies requiring FTO evaluation.
  • Ensure FTO analyses are completed in a timely manner and facilitate resolution of identified FTO issues.
  • Proactively review and analyze patents, providing strategic advice on patentability, infringement risks, and opportunities for Breville’s technologies.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the product team on matters related to intellectual property protection and risk mitigation.
  • Build a deep technical understanding of Breville’s technologies to effectively communicate with designers, engineers, and external counsel.
  • Assist teams in preparing and managing IP budgets, ensuring efficient allocation of resources across the assigned portfolio.
  • Summarize and translate key complex IP information, including patent jargon, office actions and prior arts, into plain English, for the product development team.
  • Monitor the competitive landscape in key jurisdictions (e.g., US, EP, AU, CN), identifying threats and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with external law firms as a steward for Breville, ensuring effective communication and alignment on IP strategies and filings.
  • Develop creative strategies to protect Breville’s innovative concepts and products against competitors.
  • Manage the assigned portfolio’s IP assets, including virtual marking compliance.
  • Maintain meticulous organization of documents and emails related to IP filings and correspondence.
  • Demonstrate a strategic mindset in decision-making processes, balancing short-term needs with long-term goals.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and technological advancements, applying insights to enhance Breville’s IP strategy.
  • Travel as needed for trade fairs, business meetings, conferences, and IP-related activities.
