The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. Job Summary The Queen’s Journal is an entirely student-run newspaper at Queen’s University. The paper was founded in 1873 and has been continually published ever since. The Journal publishes a bi-weekly print edition and regular online content throughout the year. A photo portfolio must be e-mailed to newjournal.editors@ams.queensu.ca at the time of your application submission to supplement your application. Job Competencies Communication Creativity Cultural Sensitivity Teamwork Professionalism Job Duties Handle all photo requests, usually 20 to 30 per week (mix of new photos and file photos) Generate photo ideas for each issue Manage and be responsible for allocating all section-heads visual requests on an online Visual Board (i.e. assigning them to the Photos Editor, Graphics Editor, or Illustrations Editor) Train and manage one Assistant Editor to complete assigned tasks efficiently and attentively, including a working knowledge and/or experience with photography Develop a contributor base from the student body Shoot assignments and be able to have you, your Assistant, or a contributor on call to shoot breaking news at all times Have a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and other Adobe platforms relevant to photo editing Attend all in-print press days to lay out stories in the paper (occurs every other Thursday) Manage a Google Drive or SharePoint for all visual requests and organize each section by folder for ease of access Work with the Production Manager and visuals team to develop visual content for each story Work closely with the Editor(s) in Chief to develop the vision and direction of the section Attend all Editorial Board and section-head meetings, as well as all trainings provided to staff Respect and adhere to all company policies, procedures and ethical standards Always serve as a representative of the AMS and its mission statement Maintain timely communication with your direct supervisor Complete all assigned tasks efficiently and attentively Complete other duties as assigned Job Requirements Possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment Work Conditions Interaction with coworkers, management and the Queen’s community The AMS is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of age, race, religion, colour, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.
Responsibilities
