Description:

Provide optimum quality of care to patients with particular regard to their casting/splinting/appliance needs, both adult and paediatric patients, across the Trust. Working closely with the multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic care to our patients. Developing inpatient and outpatient services within the Fracture Clinic and Plaster Room, including education and teaching plans. Take ‘in charge’ responsibility for the department on regular shifts.
To provide high quality, patient focused service for orthopaedic patients, both within the department and throughout the hospital as required. To ensure keeps updated with current practices within casting, plastering and orthotics and is able to actively use research as appropriate.
Develop and maintain a cohesive multi - disciplinary team (MDT). Building relationships with, communicating with and functioning effectively with the MDT. Independently managing own time, planning and prioritising workload effectively.
Contribute to the design and implementation of a comprehensive casting training program for trainee plaster technicians, in preparation for them to undertake the British Casting Certificate, and the wider multidisciplinary team within orthopaedics, including students and registered professionals working within the trust. Participation in annual staff appraisal.

Lead the service as an autonomous practitioner providing a high standard in all aspects of plaster techniques, splinting and wound care management, as required and prescribed by clinicians, communicating/educating patients with the complications relating to these, both in adult and paediatric patients. Being responsible for holistic clinical assessment of a group of patients, including physical, emotional and social needs, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated, whilst involving patients/service users/parents/guardians in their care. Acting as their advocate when necessary and acting as a point of contact for patients experiencing problems/complications with their treatment. Referring to outside agencies where necessary and appropriate.
Lead and develop a plaster room outreach service, liaising with wards, paediatric clinics, theatres, emergency department to ensure patients in all areas of the trust receive safe and effective care with regards to their casting/splinting. Keeping up to date with current research, materials and techniques.
Ensure patient information is up to date and relevant, reviewing plaster care instructions, exercise plans etc. annually. To advise on the promotion of health and prevention of illness, communicating effectively with patients, relatives and carers and ensuring that their educational needs are met.
Utilise and ensure self and others utilise information and IT systems to ensure patient information and outcomes are recorded accurately and timely. Ensuring all actions and patient care is documented accurately and legibly as per Trust policy.
Demonstrate extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, with an ability to interpret x-rays in order to assist with specific cast/appliance application.
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of wound care, including aseptic technique, removal of sutures/clips, complex dressings and care of pin sites/external fixators. Reporting any concerns to nurse in charge, clinician and tissue viability as required.
To assess and provide patients safely with a range of mobility aids, slings and supports, providing patient education and documenting appropriately.
Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
To adhere to Trust and departmental policies, procedures and current legislation at all times. Ensuring mandatory training compliance is maintained.
To be responsible for the ordering and maintenance of stock levels within the plaster room, liaising with materials management and participating in product evaluation and research. Ensure materials are cost effective and also appropriate for the treatments provided.
