The Ministry of Indigenous Relations is dedicated to advancing stronger relationships between the provincial government and Indigenous communities, organizations and people. One of the Indigenous Women’s Initiatives (IWI) division’s key focus areas is addressing violence and increasing safety and economic security of Indigenous women, girls and two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual plus (2S+) people. This work includes providing secretariat support to the Premier’s Council on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit Plus (2S+) People. The division also administers) the Alberta Indigenous Intern Program (AIIP) which aims to increase Indigenous employment within GoA and strengthen relationships with community.

QUALIFICATIONS

4 years University graduation in a related field (e.g., Indigenous relations/Native studies, Social Sciences, Women and Gender studies, or related field) plus 4 years related experience.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

• Policy Development: Developing and analyzing policies.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, government officials, and other stakeholders.

AS A SENIOR POLICY ADVISOR OVER SEEING SECRETARIAT SUPPORT FOR THE PREMIER’S COUNCIL ON MMIWG2S+ IN THE MINISTRY OF INDIGENOUS RELATIONS, YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

• Program leadership and operations: Leading the day-to-day operations of Council Secretariat support, including correspondence with Council members, meeting coordination and logistics, monitoring progress and identifying emerging key priorities.
• Stakeholder engagement: Building and maintaining strong, respectful relationships with Indigenous leaders, organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure inclusive, collaborative decision-making processes.
• Providing strategic advice: Offering expert advice to senior government officials and ministries on Indigenous matters, including policy, legislation, and community engagement strategies.
• Conducting research and analysis: Leading research efforts to understand the impacts of existing policies and identifying opportunities for new approaches to support the growth and well-being of Indigenous communities.
• Supporting Indigenous rights and interests: Advocating for the protection and advancement of Indigenous rights, promoting reconciliation efforts, and ensuring policies are developed with cultural sensitivity and respect for Indigenous traditions.
• Monitoring policy implementation: Overseeing the execution of key policy initiatives and ensuring they are effectively implemented within set timelines and budget parameters.
• Reporting and communication: Preparing briefing notes, reports, and presentations for senior leadership, ensuring clear communication of complex policy matters to diverse audiences.

AS A SENIOR POLICY ADVISOR OVERSEEING THE ALBERTA INDIGENOUS INTERN PROGRAM (AIIP), YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

• Program leadership and operations: Leading the day-to-day management of AIIP, including oversight of all interns, development of program materials, coordination of placements, and support to ministry supervisors and Indigenous organizations.
• Policy and program development: Designing operational policies, annual plans, and governance frameworks to guide the program, while continuously evaluating and improving program delivery.
• Stakeholder engagement and collaboration: Building and sustaining strong relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, GOA ministries, and post-secondary institutions to promote the program and ensure mutual benefit.
• Supporting intern success: Providing guidance and culturally informed support to Indigenous interns, helping them navigate placements and build professional networks.
• Facilitating cultural exchange and inclusion: Ensuring the program fosters understanding and collaboration between Indigenous communities and government stakeholders through cultural awareness and relationship-building.
• Promoting the program: Actively marketing AIIP across government and community channels and reporting on program outcomes to demonstrate impact and inform continuous improvement.
• Leadership and team building: Creating a cohesive and supportive environment for interns by using strong facilitation, communication, and problem-solving skills to manage issues and ensure intern success.
