POSITION OVERVIEW
The First 5 Center for Children’s Policy (First 5 Center) is California’s leading research and policy think tank dedicated to improving early childhood systems. Grounded in the experiences of California’s First 5 county commissions, the First 5 Center develops state-level, sustainable policy solutions to support California’s infants and toddlers and their families. The First 5 Center is housed within the First 5 Association of California and our teams work together as one.
We are seeking a Policy Research Associate or Senior Policy Research Associate to contribute to the development of our policy research portfolio. This member of our team will lead aspects of our research portfolio, with emphasis on home visiting, early childhood mental health, early care and education, and economic security interventions and policies. The Senior level requires a graduate degree and 5 years of relevant experience, with an expectation of greater independence in leading complex projects.
Reporting to the Director of Policy Research and Development, our new teammate is smart and self-motivated with a passion for social justice and a track record of using research to understand complex issues. This is a great position for a professional looking to deepen their policy acumen and contribute to a dynamic, committed, and passionate team.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Mission-driven with a demonstrated passion for improving outcomes for California families and a commitment to equity.
· Policy thinker, with an interest in systems and root causes.
· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of partners.
· Ability to communicate complex information in an understandable and compelling manner to a variety of audiences, both in writing and verbally.
· Talented time manager, able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
· Self-starter and problem solver, guided by curiosity, pragmatism and critical thinking.
· A nimble adapter to new technology.
· Prior experience working with or researching early childhood programs and systems (home visiting, early childhood mental health, early care and education) or economic security interventions and policies preferred.
· Demonstrated ability to bridge California families’ day-to-day experiences with the implementation of state and local policies, ensuring that programs and services are responsive, equitable, and informed by lived realities.
· Senior Policy Research Associate level requires 5 years of relevant experience and a related graduate degree.
