Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity As a Senior Power Technician for our Wiri-based Distribution Networks team, you’ll provide senior‑level technical expertise across Protection, HV plant and SCADA systems, supporting the reliability and resilience of Auckland’s electricity supply. You’ll lead and undertake complex maintenance, testing, commissioning and fault response activities within substations and switchyards, acting as a technical authority on site and supporting less experienced technicians when required. You will be responsible for: * Advanced maintenance, testing and commissioning of HV protection systems and digital relays * Testing and commissioning of transformers, HV switchgear, cables, automation and rotating plant * End‑to‑end protection and SCADA scheme testing across substations * Commissioning, servicing and fault‑finding on RTUs, communications and SCADA networks * Diagnosing and resolving complex faults beyond standard operating procedures * Providing technical guidance and support to technicians and field teams * Participating in electricity supply work control systems and after‑hours response This is a full‑time, permanent role with participation in an after‑hours on‑call roster. You’ll work independently on complex tasks while being supported by a highly experienced Energy & Utilities leadership and engineering team. Nga pūkenga matua | Important Skills We’re seeking a Senior Power Technician with strong technical capability and proven experience working on complex HV and protection systems in a live network environment. You’ll bring: * A relevant trade or tertiary qualification (Diploma, NZCE or equivalent) * Current EWRB registration with a New Zealand practising licence * Extensive hands‑on experience with HV protection systems, substations and SCADA * Strong understanding of HV risks, regulatory requirements and industry standards * Proven experience using HV test equipment and protection testing instrumentation * The ability to work autonomously, make sound technical decisions and remain calm under pressure * A safety‑first mindset and commitment to Zero Harm Ngā Painga o te Mahi ki Downer | Benefits of working with Downer At Downer, we do work that matters.
