Arup is seeking a Senior Process Safety Engineer (Chemical Manufacturing / Biopharma / Laboratories) to join our Fire / Chemical Engineering team and lead prescriptive and performance-based design strategies for local, regional, and global projects. This position can be worked out of our Boston, New York City, or Washington, D.C. offices.
We are looking for self-initiating problem-solvers who can work as part of a team to apply a wide range of fire, chemical and hazardous material technical skills. The role will include working closely with world-leading architects and building owners, developing code solutions and delivering innovative performance-based design solutions. The person in this role will provide financial and commercial project management, lead technical engineering services in projects across markets, and mentor junior staff. The role will involve interactive and collaborative work with our engineers and multi-disciplinary colleagues.

THE OPPORTUNITY

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional working experience in Chemical Process Safety or Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical or fire protection engineering.
  • PE license in chemical or fire protection engineering or the ability to obtain a license after 12 months of employment is desired.
  • Knowledge of specialty codes and standards, including but not limited to NFPA 2, NFPA 30, NFPA 33, NFPA 34, NFPA 45, NFPA 55, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 77, NFPA 86, NFPA 484, NFPA 495, NFPA 496, NFPA 497, NFPA 499, and NFPA 660
  • Familiarity with various types of material hazards, including but not limited to flammable & combustible liquids, combustible dusts & powders, reactive metals, compressed gases, cryogenic fluids, explosive materials, corrosive materials, and toxic/highly toxic materials
  • Knowledge of process safety and compliance topics, including:


    • Hazardous exhaust systems



      • Explosion control systems



        • Spill control and secondary containment methods



          • Fire rated compartmentation for hazardous materials storage and processing



            • Ignition control / grounding and bonding

            • Initiative, enthusiasm, eagerness to learn.
            • Strong communication skills essential for team-based working.
            • Excellent planning and organization skills.
            • Strong presentation skills and ability to convey technical findings and solutions to owners, user groups and design teams.
            • Working knowledge of relevant software, including Office suite of software, FDS, AutoCAD / Revit.
            • Candidate must be eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsored work authorization now or in the future.
