SENIOR PROCESS SAFETY ENGINEER (HAZOP / LOPA FACILITATOR)

Location: Fort Saskatchewan, AB
Job Type: Contract (18 months, with potential extension)
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (3–5 days onsite per week)
Pay Rate: $90 – $100 per hour (commensurate with experience)

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Process Safety Engineer to lead and facilitate process safety studies in a complex refining and petrochemical environment. The successful candidate will specialize in HAZOP, LOPA, and SIL reviews, ensuring compliance with safety standards, identifying risks, and implementing effective mitigation strategies. This role requires strong facilitation skills, technical expertise, and the ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Process Engineering (or related field).
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in process safety or process engineering within refining or petrochemical industries.
  • Proven experience facilitating HAZOP / PHA studies in operating facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of flare systems, safeguarding design, and pressure relief principles.
  • Proficiency in PHA software tools (e.g., PHA-Pro, PHAWorks).
  • Functional Safety certification (e.g., TÜV FS Eng) considered an asset.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience with LOPA, SIL verification, and barrier management.
  • Knowledge of standards (API 520/521, API 537, OSHA PSM).
  • Familiarity with Human Factors, Operability, and Maintainability principles.
  • Ability to lead workshops both onsite and remotely.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and facilitate HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, and other Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) workshops.
  • Apply risk assessment methodologies (RAM, ALARP, tolerability assessment) to mitigate hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory frameworks (IEC 61882, OSHA PSM, API guidelines, CCPS).
  • Review and validate engineering documentation (P&IDs, PFDs, cause & effect diagrams).
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to support safe and reliable operations.
  • Conduct site visits and barrier assurance field walks to verify safeguards and equipment reliability.
  • Document findings and prepare high-quality technical reports for stakeholders.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of process safety practices and training initiatives.
