Hybrid requirements: This role has flexible working patterns.
We’re looking for an experienced designer to help us build the best support tool out there and help us tell its story better on the web. You’ll be joining an intentionally small, commercially savvy, and product-centric team. Everyone on our team is technical, commits code, and speaks to customers. We maintain complete internal transparency on almost everything, and are just as driven by building a great product as we are by building a great company.
What you’ll doAs a designer at an early-stage startup, you will work across both our product and marketing efforts (and everything else that needs doing, like providing support for our own product to our customers).
You’ll be a senior individual contributor in our small but mighty design discipline, working on everything from early feature ideation, designing and shipping a feature through to building and launching a landing page to announce it to the world. You’ll work closely with the entire team, as well as our customers – in sketches and prototypes, Figma mocks and PRs on Github.
Here are some examples of things we need help with right now.
Building out Plain to cater for bigger support teams who have more complex demands. Think real-time multiplayer collaboration, rule engines and SLAs
Leveraging AI at the very core of our product to help our customers offer higher quality support faster. Many products still retrofit AI into existing UIs; but we think the biggest potential comes from things you can only do with AI, where you might not need much UI at all.
Presenting our product in a crowded market - we need to actually stand out with a look and feel that isn’t just standard SaaS and purple gradients. We want everything from our website to feature launch materials to inspire a sense of awe, to reflect the quality of our product, and look unmistakably Plain.
This is a great fit if you…Love working on intricate, complex UI and sweating the details
Want to be involved in every aspect of a new feature from planning and scoping right through to designing, building and sharing the story behind the work as it launches.
Are comfortable with HTML, CSS, and React. We don’t expect you to be an expert, but you should see code as a tool in your toolkit, feel comfortable opening PRs and be able to work in close collaboration with engineers
Prefer working in the open and default to sharing early and often - as opposed to a formal, “here are 3 options” design process
Enjoy the autonomy, uncertainty and unpredictability that comes with an early stage company.
This won’t be the right role if you…Want a product-only role. The explicit goal of this role is to work across both our product and marketing initiatives and you should have a genuine passion for both
Want to manage a team. Given our team growth plans, this is unlikely to be a need in the next 12-24 months.
Want all of the benefits that come with an established tech company - top-end comp, free drinks and lunches, etc.
Want a pure design role - you’ll be wearing many hats and get involved in all aspects of building a product and company.
Want a traditional product team set up, with a predictable roadmap, clearly scoped out tickets, a PM, and so forth.
