Description

enior / Lead UX/UI Designer | Defence

Are you a senior UX/UI leader with a track record of driving operator experience in complex, high-stakes environments? We are seeking a UX/UI Lead to spearhead the operator-experience strategy for a major Australian Defence capability project.

In this strategic design leadership role, you won't just be pushing pixels—you will serve as the voice of the operator at the highest decision-making level, forming part of a core Leadership Triad on the project alongside the Solution Architect and Systems Engineering Lead.

Key Responsibilities

  • Solution & Design Leadership: Lead the interaction concepts, design intent, and operator workflows across various roles and modes, ensuring high operational usability under normal, degraded, and exceptional conditions.
  • The Triad Partnership: Work closely as a peer with Systems Engineering and Solution Architecture leads to balance operator experience with technical feasibility, requirements, and system trade-offs.
  • HMI Baseline & Assurance: Own key design deliverables including the HMI Design Document, change proposals, and compliance records in line with tailored military standards (MIL-STD-1472H / military symbology APP-6D / MIL-STD-2525D).
  • Design Execution & Mentorship: Direct and review the day-to-day work of UI Designers (transitioning design intent into implementation-ready Figma), while maintaining the core design system.
  • Documentation & Training: Oversee operator-facing documentation, in-system help, and source material for operator training packages.

About You

  • Experience: Proven track record in senior or lead UX/UI roles delivering complex, mission-critical, or high-stakes operational software systems.
  • Cross-Functional Influence: Demonstrated ability to work alongside architects and systems engineers to shape technical trade-offs and requirements.
  • Hands-on Mastery: Strong interaction design foundation with the ability to set clear design vision and review detailed UI work.
  • Design Governance: Experience creating controlled design documentation and navigating formal customer design approvals.
  • Security Clearance: Must hold Australian Citizenship and be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance (NV1 preferred).

Desirable Skills

  • Prior experience in Defence, aerospace, control-room, or human-supervised automation domains.
  • Familiarity with military standards (e.g., MIL-STD-1472) and tactical symbology.
  • Experience developing structured user documentation, embedded help, or training content.

What’s on Offer

  • High-Impact Role: Directly influence the interface and experience of next-generation critical Defence systems.
  • Leadership: Own the project UX domain within a collaborative, peer-led leadership framework rather than purely acting as a production asset.
  • Competitive Package: Attractive salary and flexible working conditions with dedicated professional development pathways.
