Mott MacDonald is looking for a passionate and experienced Senior Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer to join our dynamic team in Boston, New York or New Jersey offices. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on engineering work across a wide range of electrical utility projects. WHAT YOU BRING:

We’re seeking candidates who are not only technically skilled but also enthusiastic about mentoring and collaboration. Ideal qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in protection and control engineering, including SCADA systems.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with electrical utility switching stations/substations and related equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of protective relay schemes, fiber optic communication, metering, and AC/DC power distribution.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and developing complex control schematics and electrical layout drawings.
  • Familiarity with NERC and IEEE standards.
  • Proven ability to mentor junior staff and foster technical growth.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

The expected salary for this position is:
New York: $154,000 - $188,000
New Jersey: $153,000 - $187,000
Massachusetts: $174,000 - $212,000
Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.

Responsibilities

As a Senior P&C Engineer, you’ll play a key role in designing and implementing protection and control systems for transmission and distribution projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing P&C systems for switching stations and substations ranging from 4kV to 500kV.
  • Creating and reviewing detailed engineering drawings including one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC distribution, relay protection schematics, SCADA controls, and control house layouts.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams including layout designers, system protection engineers, construction supervisors, and field personnel.
  • Performing calculations for AC/DC load banks and battery sizing.
  • Providing technical guidance and quality reviews for junior engineers and external contractors.
  • Coordinating with vendors and reviewing technical documentation to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Leading design teams on complex projects and engaging in technical discussions with clients.
  • Applying your expertise in microprocessor relay design and high-voltage equipment controls, including SCADA and GIS systems.
  • Supporting proposal efforts through estimating and scheduling P&C work.
