Description
What’s the Role?  The Senior Quality Engineer (SQE) is responsible for ensuring the quality, resilience, and regulatory compliance of Westpac’s Domestic Payments platforms, including PAG, NGS, Payment Repository and Payments APIs. This is a hands‑on engineering role requiring strong test automation capability, experience testing vendor‑supplied / packaged software, and a passion for modern quality practices, including contract testing and AI‑assisted testing techniques. In this role you will have the opportunity to influence how quality is built into large‑scale, vendor‑heavy platforms. You will work on critical national payment infrastructure and be part of the team that is modernising Quality Engineering through automation, contracts, and AI. Key Responsibilities * Design and execute automation‑first, risk‑based testing across APIs, integrations, and end‑to‑end payment flows. * Build and maintain automated test solutions for complex, distributed payment systems. * Implement and maintain contract testing to assure service‑to‑service interactions and protect against breaking changes. * Validate vendor‑supplied and packaged payment platforms, including upgrades, patches, and configuration changes. * Reduce reliance on manual testing through scalable, reusable automation frameworks. * Provide clear quality assessments to support release readiness and confidence‑to‑release decisions. * Collaborate closely with engineers, product owners, solution designers, and delivery partners. * Contribute to continuous improvement of Quality Engineering practices across the Domestic Payments program.   What do I need?  Essential * 7+ years’ experience in Quality Engineering / Software Testing, ideally within payments, banking, or regulated environments. * Strong experience with test automation, particularly API and integration testing. * Experience testing vendor or packaged software products where source code access may be limited. * Hands‑on experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern QE tooling. * Strong data validation and SQL skills. * Extensive experience in following technical tools. * Java (Spring Boot)  * Oracle  * IBM MQ * Apache Kafka * Test Automation tooling (Selenium / Playwright / K6 / Postman / Newman) * Design Patterns * Python / Perl / Linux (Bash)  Highly Desirable * Experience with contract testing and interface validation. * Exposure to real‑time or domestic payments platforms. * Practical use of, or strong interest in, AI‑assisted testing techniques (e.g. intelligent test selection, defect analysis, test optimisation). Personal Attributes * Strong passion for automation and engineering‑led quality. * Curious, forward‑thinking mindset with interest in emerging QE and AI capabilities. * Confident communicator who can raise quality risks constructively. * Comfortable working in high‑stakes, always‑on payment environments.
