The General Surgery Senior Trainee is a key position within the Department of General Surgery and acts as the day-to-day supervisor of the junior medical officers working in this department, including SET trainees, unaccredited surgical registrars and senior RMOs. The Surgical Senior Trainee works across all three surgical units within the Department of General Surgery, namely upper GIT surgery, colorectal surgery and surgical oncology, to coordinate the care of acute admissions and elective patients. The Surgical Senior Trainee provides supervision and support to both accredited and non-accredited registrars, particularly with operative cases, and is responsible for the rostering and leave arrangements of Department registrars. The Surgical Senior Trainee is also responsible for coordinating the Department’s education program for surgical and prevocational trainees. The Surgical Senior Trainee assists the Head of Department in coordinating the clinical governance and patient safety activities of the Department including morbidity and mortality meetings and has an important role in ensuring that junior medical staff fully participate in these activities. The role is flexible and allows for the Surgical Senior Trainee to work with any or all of the Department’s three subspecialty units to focus on increasing their exposure to operative cases and acute care surgery within their area of subspecialty interest. In this way, the role is an ideal transition from SET training to post-fellowship training, allowing the successful candidate to build their experience and confidence in a tertiary care environment.
