Primary Role and Responsibilities:


  • This role will closely partner and be co-located with R&D at the VIAVI Ottawa office.
  • New Product Introduction (NPI) for VIAVI market leading MAP optical test platform.
  • Provide DFT direction to R&D at the concept stage of new product development
  • Test development and ongoing continuous improvement for the test solutions on the MAP series product portfolio.
  • Design, develop, and influence the various automated production systems required to implement the product test strategy.
  • Devise the overall manufacturing and service and configuration strategy for new products and optimize manufacturing & service calibration and test.
  • Detailed project planning to ensure that all production systems are developed, debugged, and validated in time for production pilot run.
  • Partner with R&D and Mfg. Engineering to develop contract manufacturing ready and reliable test systems, jigs & fixturing.
  • Effective use of Gage R&R and measure system evaluation tools in NPI to ensure stable test system are deployed in manufacturing and service.
  • Installation and validation of production systems at the final production facility, usually at contract manufacture in Asia.
  • Support TL9000 Periodic Re-test program for VIAVI MAP series portfolio.

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:


Personal skills/attributes and experience:


  • 4-year Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering, Physics and/or Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience developing automated test, both hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic communications technology – e.g., Power Meter, Spectrum Analyzer, OTDR etc.
  • LabWindows CVI programing experience, LabVIEW.
  • Experience with National Instruments TestStand would be beneficial.
  • Experienced in a structured programming language (such as C / C++).
  • Python or other scripting based programming experience
  • SQL database programming experience for test record and data management.
  • Demonstrated project planning/management skills.
  • Process improvement and data analysis – knowledge of Lean principles or equivalent experience.
  • Must be a self-starter, strong team player and demonstrate leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time to Asia contract manufacturing site.
  • Language - English primary. (Additional language skills beneficial but not a requirement).
