About the role We’re looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to join Southern Cross as Senior Remediation Partner to help advise on complex issues and lead investigations into matters of potential customer harm, working with data analysts and business teams to understand issues and determine what remediation may be required. At Southern Cross, you’ll work on complex and meaningful matters that require careful investigation, legal analysis, strong judgment, and a practical approach to solving problems. You’ll partner with teams across the organisation to understand issues, assess customer impact, and ensure remediation is delivered in a fair and transparent way. You’ll also work alongside a small team of remediation specialists and data analysts, combining legal analysis, data insights, and business context to resolve issues and prevent them from happening again. About the opportunity As a Senior Remediation Partner, you’ll provide timely, pragmatic and riskbased advice to support the design, delivery and execution of remediation activity arising from regulatory, conduct or operational issues. Working closely with data analysts and business subject matter experts, you’ll analyse evidence, identify root causes, and determine whether remediation activity is required. Some matters may involve large remediation programmes affecting many members, while others may involve smaller targeted investigations or case-based assessments. You’ll partner closely with business leaders, data analysts, Legal, Regulatory Affairs and Line 1 teams to ensure remediation approaches are legally sound, well governed and focused on fair outcomes for customers. This role requires someone who is comfortable navigating complexity, working autonomously, and bringing structure and clarity to issues that cut across multiple teams. You’ll be trusted to operate with a high degree of autonomy, bring structure and clarity to complex issues, and provide confidence to senior leaders, committees and regulators through transparent reporting and disciplined execution. What you’ll do Investigate incidents or issues that may have resulted in customer harm Work alongside data analytics teams and business SMEs to analyse evidence and understand root causes Assess the nature and scale of potential customer harm and its impact on members Develop and recommend remediation approaches aligned with regulatory expectations Provide legal and strategic advice to senior stakeholders about remediation investigations Clearly communicate investigation findings, risks, and remediation options to stakeholders Act as the primary point of contact for assigned remediation matters, providing clear updates and escalation where required Provide reporting and insights to governance forums and senior stakeholders Partner with teams across the organisation to ensure remediation actions are implemented and closed effectively Instruct external legal counsel where required What you’ll bring An LLB or equivalent, with a current New Zealand practising certificate. At least 8 years’ PQE Experience working in financial services, insurance, banking or another regulated environment A solid understanding of the New Zealand financial services regulatory environment and regulator expectations Experience contributing to investigations, remediation programmes, regulatory response, or customer harm assessments Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with the ability to navigate complex issues The ability to translate complex legal or technical matters into clear, practical advice Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the confidence to work across multiple teams A methodical, structured approach when dealing with sensitive or complex matters Who we are Ngākau nui.
