Department Overview:
OHSU’s university-wide research administration provides services and support to OHSU investigators; leads strategic initiatives in research; fosters collaboration; and moves our discoveries into the world. The senior advisor role is a multifaceted leadership role, providing key administrative and operational leadership and counsel for the integration, centralization, and expansion of research at OHSU, including basic, translational, clinical, and community research. Leads operational and culture change in research units.

Function/Duties of Position:

  • Translate strategies developed by Research Restructuring Commission (RRC) and OHSU Leadership into operational processes and best practices.
  • Develop plans and implement institution-wide clinical research centralization and improvements based on recommendations of key consultants (e.g., Huron), RRC, sub-committees of RRC, and OHSU Leadership.
  • Lead centralization efforts throughout research administration to achieve efficiency, compliance, and excellent service. Work closely with central research administration groups (e.g., OPAM) and with faculty/principal investigators, department staff, research and study staff, and others to coordinate these efforts and effect change management. Leverage strong internal and external connections, as well as formal and informal networks, to aid in implementation of cultural change in research operations, prioritizing centralization and service excellence.
  • In coordination with Research Administration Partner Pod (RAPP), the Research Finance team(s), and key departmental/center/institute leadership, provide assistance to centralized pre- and post-award grants and finance support for all schools and centers/institutes.
  • In coordination with OPAM and BSG leadership, and in alignment with operationalizing structural and cultural change, assist with implementation and operation of Industry Research Agreements team within OPAM.
  • Partnering with the VP-RA and VP-REFS, develop and oversee institutional research metrics. Provide insight and analysis on evolving methodologies. Oversee and manage organizational analytics projects involving multiple approaches, including comparative research with other institutions and entities and data analytics, culminating in reports, briefs, correspondence and program modifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in health administration or related field, or Bachelor’s degree and specific related experience as detailed below.
  • 10+ years of experience leading research operations.
  • 10 years of experience working in higher education environments in increasingly responsible leadership roles, preferably in research administration and operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead research administration groups–centrally and in matrixed environments—through significant change, with a focus on best practices and excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience leading within complex organizations.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and experience of research operations, and particularly clinical research operations; significant knowledge and understanding of research compliance requirements, particularly human subjects research.
  • Experience disseminating research administration best practices to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical skills with the ability to understand and synthesize complex guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to interpret, convey, explain, and uphold regulatory requirements to administrative and investigator clients in the OHSU research community.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Senior leadership role with experience implementing significant operational and cultural change and champion of organizational change.
  • Familiarity with OHSU’s research environment with robust connections to the research community, including PIs, administrators, research and study staff.
