JOB SUMMARY

This position is eligible for hybrid telework. Employees living within 50 miles of the primary work location will be required to work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. Employees may reside outside the state of Minnesota if they live in a state bordering Minnesota and are within 50 miles of the primary work location. This position will design, conduct, and provide leadership in research and analysis for the Department of Labor and Industry in the areas of Workers’ Compensation, Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Codes and Licensing, Apprenticeship, and Labor Standards for the development of state policy; provide department management with information necessary for decision making and long-range planning; disseminate the results of analyses and perform related work as required. This position will ensure the production of statistics, reports, and research support the department’s goals and are timely, accurate, and readily understood by agency leadership, legislators, and general audiences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three (3) years of experience* in research, data management, analysis, or statistical reporting.
  • A Master’s degree in Research, Statistics, Economics, or Math may substitute for 18 months of experience; a Bachelor’s Degree in Research, Statistics, Economics, or Math may substitute for one year of experience; an Associate’s degree in Research, Statistics or Math may substitute for six months experience.

Experience should demonstrate:

  • Research skills sufficient to analyze requests, define needs, develop objectives and determine the resources needed to produce reports.
  • Statistical techniques sufficient to determine the research methodology to be used for major program studies.
  • Writing, editing and troubleshooting code such as SPSS, SAS, R, SQL or other programs.
  • Ability to plan and outline procedures necessary in the compilation of data for major studies.
  • Ability to collect, analyze and interpret complex statistical data and present interpretations in clear, concise form.
  • Skill in writing for and speaking to the public and to interpret complex statistical data to lay persons.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, who do not share your same culture, ethnicity, language, or other common experiences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in creating data visualizations to graphically represent information and data.
  • Proficiency in Transact SQL to find, change or otherwise manipulate information in relational databases.
  • Analyzing data – gathering relevant information from different sources and identifying important relationships; breaking complex problems/issues into manageable, actionable components.
  • Language skills other than English (such as Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen or ASL).
