POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Miami Biomechanics Institute is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate to contribute to orthopaedic biomechanical research. This position is ideal for individuals with a strong background in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering who are passionate about advancing orthopaedic research. The candidate will work closely with surgeons, industry partners, and students to conduct biomechanical testing, analyze data, and contribute to scientific publications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of biomechanics, mechanical testing, and medical imaging.
  • Experience with research design, data analysis, and scientific writing.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and remain self-motivated to follow up and see a project to completion.
  • Must be available to work some weekends.
  • Strong organizational skills as multiple projects are occurring simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills to facilitate collaboration
Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage multiple research projects.
  • Monitor project progress and address any deviations or delays promptly.
  • Work closely with orthopaedic surgeons and industry personnel to develop, execute, and analyze biomechanical studies for surgical techniques, medical implants, and related applications.
  • Operate mechanical testing machines (Instron E3000 and MTS 858 Mini Bionix II), ensuring compliance with ASTM standards for industry-sponsored studies. Training on equipment use is available, but candidate must have a solid understanding of fundamental engineering concepts.
  • Operate medical imaging tools (X-ray, DEXA, mini C-arm fluoroscopy).
  • Operate 3D motion capture system (Optitrack) and analyze data.
  • Operate pressure transducers, DVRTs and small circuitry.
  • Prepare research protocols, reports, abstracts, and manuscripts for journal publication and present findings at conferences.
  • Prepare project budgets and invoices.
  • Order supplies from internal and external vendors as needed for each individual project.
  • Schedule routine maintenance for equipment at the lab.
  • Mentor and work alongside BME senior design students as well as other engineering/pre[1]medical undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Proficiency in CAD software for 3D Modeling and Simulation (SolidWorks, FEBio) is preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in image/video analysis (3D slicer, ImageJ) is preferred but not required.
