ABOUT US

At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We are proud to be authentic, different and pioneers. We are driven by a desire to solve real problems and improve everyday lives with intuitive solutions that do more but use less. Family owned, we are not restricted by conventional thinking; we explore, discover and learn for ourselves. Never satisfied, we believe everything can always be made better.

Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Engineer to join the highly successful Motors and Power Systems team within the Research, Design and Development (RDD) department. The team have been pioneers in the industry for more than 15 years, coming up with a range of very high speed, very power dense compressor motors that are highly efficient, cost-effective and robust. These motors are conceived in the UK and manufactured at Dyson’s state-of-the-art facilities in Singapore and Philippines.
Within this team the successful applicant will be principally working on the mechanical design of our Dyson Digital Motors (DDMs) and the integration of them into our products. Other areas of work include state-of-the-art electromechanical assemblies for applications such as advanced battery packs, heaters and actuators.
We are seeking candidates who are adept at both independent and collaborative work within multifunctional teams, showcasing exceptional team-working abilities. The ideal candidate should demonstrate adaptability and efficiency as a problem-solver, employing a flexible approach with meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, the ability to swiftly adapt to changing priorities and projects in dynamic research environments is highly valued.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Contribute significantly to shaping and refining new motors and power systems from their initial research phases to detailed development.
  • Innovate and create mechanical designs from scratch, moving from concept to practical demonstration, encompassing prototyping and rigorous testing. Ensure designs are optimized for large-scale production and automated/semi-automated assembly (DFM and DFA principles).
  • Devise inventive and technically robust solutions to intricate multi-physical challenges.
  • Leverage personal engineering expertise while collaborating closely with experts in various engineering domains.
  • Employ systems thinking and established design processes to efficiently generate and document design concepts. Support the definition of structure, detailed design, and validation of novel motors and power systems.

About you

  • A degree (2:1 or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, or combined Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong knowledge of physical “first principles” with ability to perform calculations to inform design direction, including basic tolerance stacks
  • Proficient in the use of CAD for component and assembly design (Siemens NX and Teamcener12 is an advantage, but training can be provided)
  • Experience in using ANSYS Workbench to perform finite element analysis
  • Ability to solve complex problems in a logical manner
