The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a world leader in infectious disease research, and our Human Challenge Facility (HCF) plays a key role in accelerating the development of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics that improve global health. We are an expert team in Controlled Human Infection Models, working to advance clinical interventions for disadvantaged populations worldwide.
We are seeking a Senior Research Nurse to take on a leadership role within the HCF, overseeing the clinical operations and staff. The postholder will be instrumental in operationalising the facility for its first inpatient study, ensuring quality, integrity, and excellence in clinical trial delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING:

  • Registered Nurse (Adult) with NMC registration
  • Degree in a healthcare-related field
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification
  • BLS/ILS certification

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience leading and managing a clinical team
  • Significant experience in clinical research
  • Experience coordinating clinical trials, including regulatory compliance
  • Proficiency in venepuncture, IV cannulation, and clinical investigations
  • Strong project management and organisational skills
  • Experience in staff training and mentorship
  • Competency with MS Office and electronic data management tools
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and night shifts, as required
Responsibilities

STRATEGIC AND LEADERSHIP DUTIES

  • Lead the day-to-day management of clinical activities within the HCF.
  • Oversee the clinical team and visiting staff, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Support the Clinical Operations Manager and deputise when required.
  • Implement processes to ensure high-quality research delivery aligned with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.
  • Act as a key point of contact between the research team, NHS, external agencies, and LSTM departments.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research visits, clinical assessments, and procedures such as venepuncture, vital signs monitoring, and respiratory sampling.
  • Assist in research bronchoscopy procedures, ensuring safe patient care.
  • Administer treatments and investigational drugs in accordance with study protocols.
  • Ensure study-specific investigations are completed per protocol requirements.
  • Manage caseloads of study participants and ensure safety monitoring.

ADMINISTRATIVE & OPERATIONAL DUTIES

  • Develop and review study-specific documents and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain databases and accurate records of participant activity and financial tracking.
  • Oversee resource management, including medical supplies and consumables.
  • Coordinate recruitment events and public engagement initiatives to promote research participation.
