KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

You have expertise in software engineering or software systems design for industrial systems? You are interested in technologies and concepts around industrial ecosystems like digital twins, Asset Administration Shell, data spaces, or edge architectures? You would like to apply and extend your knowledge in an interesting and agile research environment? You want to work in a leading global technology company that energizes the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more sustainable future? Then join our team of highly motivated researchers in our ABB Research Center in Mannheim to develop the foundations of future ABB offerings.

In our ABB Research Center Germany, you will develop cutting edge software technologies which prepare ABB’s future products for our automation and electrification businesses for a more sustainable future. You work and collaborate on the border between industrial research and academic partners world-wide.

  • You initiate, manage, and participate in applied research and technology transfer projects and work collaboratively with international ABB divisions and their product development teams, end customers, partners, and academic institutions.
  • You frequently scout and tailor new technologies around Industry 4.0, industrial IoT, digital twins, automation systems, and edge computing architectures.
  • You apply your skills in software engineering and architecture for industrial systems
  • You build prototypes to validate concepts and communicate your work inside of ABB and outside of ABB with customers and on scientific conferences.
  • You secure intellectual property through patent applications and publish scientific articles.
  • You strongly develop your technical and soft skills to boost your career.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ROLE

  • You have a degree in computer science, software engineering, automation engineering, or a related field, combined with either academic experience (PhD) or professional experience in Industry 4.0 technologies or (industrial) software engineering/architecture.
  • You have hands-on experience in software design and development (e.g., C++, .Net, Python, Java).
  • You have a track record in publishing research results at conferences and/or journals.
  • You are interested in consortia and standardization work around Industry 4.0 / digital ecosystems, like digital twins and digital product passport, e.g., as part of ZVEI, Plattform Industrie 4.0, Industrial Digital Twin Association
  • Beneficial: German language skills (due to the major research community around Industry 4.0 being located in German speaking countries)
  • Beneficial: Knowledge in edge computing and cloud-native technologies, web technologies
  • Beneficial: Domain knowledge in process automation or discrete manufacturing
  • Beneficial: Industrial automation technologies (e.g., Asset Administration Shell, OPC UA, AutomationML, IEC 61131-3, IEC 61499, etc.)
