Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in microbiology, biological sciences, or a closely related field. Five years of full-time research experience in microbiology, biochemistry, structural biology, crystallography, and drug discovery to include at least three years of research experience following attainment of a doctoral degree. Extensive experience with in vitro model of protein expression, purification, enzymatic activity, with structural-based drug design. Extensive experience with studies dealing with the discovery of the mechanism of action of small molecules targeting fungal organisms. Extensive experience with in vivo models of fungal infections, such as aspergillosis, cryptococcosis and candidiasis, cell and tissue type specific responses at transcriptional and protein analysis levels.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with fungal pathogens and fungal disease models, mammalian cell culture and bio/immunological assay skills (e.g., WB, ELISA, PCR, scRNAseq). Experience working in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility. Experience working under Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) conditions. Experience working with HPLC, gas-chromatography mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry for lipid (particularly for sphingolipids and sterols) and for the identification of small molecules compounds in various body fluids (e.g. plasma).

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

Stony Brook University has a Senior Research Scientist position available to lead research in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The incumbent will independently design research and ensure that all research protocols follow the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. The incumbent will serve as a lead scientist in the laboratory of Dr. Del Poeta and will plan and conduct research experiments in the fields of Fungal Pathogenesis and drug discovery and development. These activities will include operation of equipment, design and execution of experimental procedures, and collection, analysis and interpretation of data using specialized methods in support of a research program in the laboratory of Dr. Del Poeta in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Duties:

  • Conduct research in the field of fungal pathogenesis and antifungal drug discovery. This includes the planning, design and implementation of experiments to achieve the research objectives, and the analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Participate in the writing of papers for publication and the presentation of results in scientific conferences, workshops and seminars. Participation in the preparation of grant proposals and applications.
  • Supervise, plan, organize, train and evaluate the activities of others including postdoctoral associates, research support positions and graduate assistants.
  • Equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed, and maintenance of all laboratory records consistent with University policy.
  • Other duties as assigned.
