Description

The Department of Astronomy seeks a Senior Research Technician to join the Astro-Machine-Learning Laboratory. Our group conducts cutting-edge research across multiple domains, including:

  • Developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) workflows for advanced spectral analysis for SDSS-V
  • Identifying knowledge gaps in astronomy through data mining
  • Enhancing AI literacy throughout the department by integrating machine learning workflows into astronomical research

The Research Technician will contribute to research projects within the Astro-Machine-Learning Laboratory, with a focus on facilitating AI workflow implementation. Key duties include conducting weekly departmental seminars to introduce AI workflow tools and best practices to faculty and students. The position also involves active participation in the astro-machine-learning group meetings and providing support for statistical and machine learning techniques to graduate students and researchers.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, Data Science, or related field, 2 years of relevant experience required with Associate’s Degree; 4 years of relevant experience required with High School diploma or GED.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s or Masters Degree in Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, Data Science, or related field

  • Two years of research experience in machine learning, data science, or computational research
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python with scientific computing libraries
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks
  • Excellent communication skills for conducting seminars and technical training
  • Prior teaching or workshop facilitation experience

Pay range: $19.28-$25.19 per hour. The range of offers for this position will be based on internal equity, the unit’s budget and the individual’s qualifications.
This position is contingent upon funding and will end by March 6, 2026, with the possibility of an additional 6 months renewal.
