Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria’s courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.
Collectively, Victoria’s Supreme, County, Magistrates’, Children’s, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the `Courts Group’.
Our people enable the Courts Group to deliver on each jurisdictions own strategic priorities while also pursuing strategic opportunities that are interconnected and deliver benefits more broadly.

The successful applicant will:

  • Undertake complex, high-level legal research into areas of the County Court’s civil jurisdiction and produce timely and accurate advice for the Court’s Judges and Judicial Registrars.
  • Provide timely and concise high quality written advice.
  • Provide support to the Court’s Civil Rules Committee and the Judicial CPD Committee.
  • Manage judicial review matters in which the Court is named as a defendant, including providing advice and seeking instructions in respect of the filing of Hardiman letters.
  • Monitor legislative and common law developments in areas relevant to the Court’s civil jurisdiction and advise Judges and Judicial Registrars of the likely impact.
  • Proactively engage with Divisions to identify resources to be developed for Judges and Judicial Registrars and formulate these materials.
  • Assist the Manager of Law Reform and Policy in responding to law reform consultation requests from stakeholders that impact upon the Court’s civil jurisdiction.
  • Provide support to the Court’s Rules Committee.
  • Contribute to a positive workplace culture.
  • Undertake other duties as directed by the Manager Law Reform and Policy

Responsibilities:

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the County Court of Victoria to perform the role of Senior Researcher (Civil) role within the Law Reform and Policy Team. The role is part of the Court’s Governance, People, Policy and Communications Team.
The County Court’s Research Unit provides high-level specialist research and analysis support to Judges and Judicial Registrars. This involves addressing legal problems and questions that may arise in the course of judgment writing or hearing a matter, researching complex legal questions, analysing case law, statutory interpretation, assisting in the development of tools and resources for use within Divisions and drafting papers on legal topics for conferences, seminars or lectures.
