Responsibilities

This position is primarily designed to benefit junior doctors who wish to pursue a career in surgery, focusing on General Surgery but including exposure to urology and ear, nose and throat surgery, and the subspecialties of UGI, colorectal, breast, and endocrine surgery. The position will provide effective surgical services to patients under supervision within SWSLHD in complex clinical environments whilst facilitating trainee’s preparation for a career in surgery.

There will be ample opportunity for theatre exposure. Responsibilities include:

  • Co-ordinating admission, management and discharge planning of patients with all members of the team.
  • Ensuring admission and management plans are documented in the relevant medical records.
  • Involvement in day-to-day assessment and management of patients including effective clinical handover.
  • Arranging consultations.
  • Involvement in discharge planning, liaising with all members of the team, local medical officers and community services.
  • Involvement in decision-making in consultation with senior members of the team.
  • Active participation in educational and career development opportunities offered including attendance at teaching sessions.
  • Full participation in after hours on call as required including nights roster.
  • Temporary relieving of general surgical trainees at Bankstown and our rotation hospitals (POW, Bega, Wollongong, Fairfield, Sutherland, Darwin).
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Minimum two years postgraduate medical experience at commencement of the post with demonstrated surgical experience appropriate to a doctor in the early part of their surgical career.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
  • Demonstrated effective teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary clinical care team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in surgery with a view to future training with RACS. This includes completion of or preparation for the RACS Primary Examinations.
  • Evidence of continued professional development appropriate to an early surgical career, commitment to self-directed education and teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates.
