About the job Join UKAEA's Office of the Chief Engineer and play a key role in shaping the safety case for future fusion power plants. Working across the EU DEMO programme and wider fusion initiatives, you'll lead complex safety and environmental studies, influence plant design, and provide expert advice on licensing, regulation and environmental protection throughout the full plant lifecycle. This is an opportunity to contribute to the safe delivery of commercial fusion energy while working with leading scientists, engineers and international partners. What You'll be Doing Lead safety and environmental analysis for fusion power plant designs, supporting the EU DEMO programme and future commercial fusion projects. Develop and deliver safety case studies covering plant operation, environmental impact, waste management and decommissioning. Assess radiological inventories, environmental releases and associated risks to support plant design and licensing. Recommend design improvements that minimise environmental impact and reduce safety risks. Develop and refine safety methodologies, models and analysis tools to support regulatory submissions. Collaborate with engineers, scientists and international partners to integrate safety and environmental considerations into plant design. Provide expert technical advice on fusion safety, environmental protection and regulatory compliance to senior leaders. Engage with regulators and government bodies to support fusion plant licensing and help shape future regulatory approaches. Contribute to the development of safety modelling capabilities and ensure analytical tools remain current and fit for purpose. Build strong relationships across UKAEA, European partners and external stakeholders to support the safe development of fusion energy. What You'll Bring Master's degree (or preferably a PhD) in a relevant science or engineering discipline. Strong knowledge of fusion technologies and the principles of nuclear safety and safety assessment. Experience applying safety analysis techniques within a nuclear, fusion or similarly regulated engineering environment. Knowledge of nuclear technology, radiation behaviour, activation and radiological safety. Experience delivering complex technical projects and working with multidisciplinary teams. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
